Why are wood elves tan and High elves white?

Since the high elves have sun exposure in felwithe 24/7 and since wood elves live in dark woods with no sun light, how the hell are they more tanned?

I'm guessing that after making the wood elves (usually from pine wood), a mahogany stain is applied before the sealant in order to bring out the natural wood highlights.
