From reading through those it sounds like there's nothing he can do? So, this could potentially go on indefinitely? I always thought there were ways to combat DDOS attacks?

There are expensive solutions I'm sure they are looking into. Datacenters often provide some protection from this for a fee but it sounds like their current one no longer does. It won't go on indefinitely unless someone is making money cause it costs $$$ to ddos.
