Default Kruunch's EQ Newbie Guide

dug this out from 2002 on Brell

EQ Newbie Guide
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tips on starting out in EQ and on Brell specifically from someone that's been here for an awfully long time:

1) As soon as you log in for the first time do a /who all 55 60 and start asking them for plats. By process of elimination someone will pay you to STFU. This is how all newbies start out.

2) To find out all about the items in this game, do NOT go to a website and read up on them. These are considered spoilers and bad form to "cheat" by reading up on what drops where and what it does. Rather inspect higher level players by right clicking on them and then asking them about each item in their inventory. The more you inspect the same person, the more it shows your interest and thus the player you are inspecting will feel more obliged to help you out since you are obviously a "serious" player.

3) Next, find out where you're bound (where you go when you die) by inviting everyone you can to /duel.

4) Now that you have some money and an idea of the items you want you're ready to go out into the wide world of Norrath. The first thing you will notice at this level are single players fighting mobs. Always help out another player by helping to kill the mob they're fighting. If you get the experience message, that means the EQ client has recognized and rewarded you for helping out that player. Don't forget to loot the corpse and /wave to the player you just helped before continuing on in your adventures.

4a) You should also ask that player you just helped for a "donation" for helping. Only the rudest players won't "tip" you for helping out with their MOBs.

5) After doing this a few times you should reach 2nd level. From this point on you're a "big boy" and not a newbie anymore, so you should ask every 55+ level person you meet if you can attend one of their raids.

5a) Also ask around and find out what the best guilds are on Brell. The do a /who all guild name and start introducing yourself to all of that guild's members by saying "Hi I just dinged 2nd level! What will your guild offer me to join up?". Only the top guilds will offer a "signing bonus" so don't forget to ask about that with every guild you want to apply to.

6) If you need to get anywhere in Norrath, you need a Teleport (also knows as a Port). Don't walk or take a boat. That's soooo 1999. Instead, it is the unwritten rule of Brell that all Druids and Wizards above 29th level are required to port you upon request. This is so normal all you have to do is find a Druid and say "Hey, port me to Nexus now please!". Don't forget to "tip" your porter. A few coppers should suffice.

7) At this point you will probably face a death due to the fact that some jagoff didn't help you kill a mob when you needed it. When you die, you should ask for a rez from a 56+ level Cleric or a Cleric with a "rez stick". While at your current level you won't have lost experience nor will you have left a corpse, Clerics always appreciate being needed so ask anyways. Besides it's in the EULA.

When you reach a point where you want to group with other players you should not waste their time by asking them. Rather, just start inviting who you want. Eventually you will have a strong and cohesive group formed and you are ready now for dungeons!

9) When in a dungeon, it is considered polite to bring mobs that you don't want to other players who have been in the zone longer then you have. Even better, when you zone into a dungeon for the first time, find out where the established camps are, and start bringing them mobs. In groups of 5 is usually considered polite. Don't bring more, or people will just think you are trying to be a brown nose.

10) You may get various tells at this point. Reply to all of them with the line "I'm a PRC recruit!". This means you are a Person who Really Cares. This will open many doors for you on Brell.

11) Finally, remember you do everyone around you a favor by being the most well equipped you can be, so go ahead and loot every mob that you can in groups. You might find some people that bitch, but they only bitch because they care about you.

Good luck on your road to happy adventuring on Brell
Player of nothing in particular and it's a damn fine game!
