Plastics, got massive infusion from goverment taxes. It wasn't the natural market that wanted them. Consumers have hated plastics from the beginning.

The reason we don't use glass bottles is because of goverment.

They use them in Mexico where they could use whatever they want because it's cheaper.

The boom in consumer plastics was a compound effect of wartime industrial policy, Cold-War R&D dominance, and cheap petrochemical feedstocks fostered by federal spending and tax policy. By the time private advertising was telling Americans “Better Living Through Chemistry,” most of the heavy lifting had already been financed by Uncle Sam.
