Hmm this is interesting.

But my initial impression is that other than a couple of newsletters, I havent really heard too much info from balanced sources on FF14 -

I just hope square does a good job and this one wont be following the continual trend of under-developed and rushed released MMO's that we've been witnessing since after WoW.

Considering how recently they announced the game even existing, I have a strong feeling this is the case once again =(

Most mmos are rush released due to a lack of $$ to develop, as we have seen with the likes of vanguard and warhammer. Square Enix I'm sure, does not lack the resources to create a MMO. Besides that this franchise is already VERY popular and FFXI still has a very strong player base. In a press release, released in 2009, it was stated that FINAL FANTASY XI has a robust community of 500,000 subscribers and more than 1.7 million player characters from around the world. For a game released in May 2002 (jp), Nov 2002 (us) its pretty interesting to see that the game is still this popular. Furthermore if anyone has played 11 as of recent they have been making a lot of changes in that game to test certain aspects they want to implement into 14 not to mention this game has been in the works for a very long time. Also from the time to time that I have gone back and played 11 they are very active in keeping RMT down and making tweaks and fixes to balance the game. I have always enjoyed 11 and I have high expectations of 14. From what I have seen and read about the game I cannot wait to see it.

WoW was rushed also. Constant server crashes, no PvP mechanics, broken classes...heh. Welcome to MMO's not a ONE has ever been smooth from launch, even EQ and UO suffered their fair share of launch issues.

Maybe that's the problem a lot of us have with new MMOs?

We start it when it isn't truly finished, so we can't appreciate it to its full potential? eh

All MMOs are going to have problems at release no matter how hard they try and make everything work from the get go there will be a problem even if its just the slightest thing. Theres something about thousands upon thousands of people flooding servers on the release of a game that just does not sit well with the servers, am i right? Even when expansions release we see issues with games. I dont think i can name a game that has not had an issue on release, its just the nature of MMOs, FFXIV wont be any different, thats not really what I'm worried about, i know it will exist. But Square in my own opinion has done the best in smoothing over their MMO (ffxi) compared to any other development team for any other MMO. But then again thats my own opinion, WoW continues to have constant problems, particularly b/c they try and satisfy what i claim to be the 3 different play styles, hardcore raiders, casual raiders, and PVP players, not to mention people who have no interest in PVP or raiding really but just want to enjoy the solo aspects of the game. TBH I quit WoW because Blizz was trying too hard to meet the needs of all these play styles, I just did not like the changes they made after Vanilla WoW. Anywho reasoning behind me liking FFXI/FFXIV so much is because it fits the game style I like. Group grinds are fun for me, I get to meet people, chat, and play a game, its a good time! Not to mention you invest so much time into your one character that once you start building him up leveling multiple jobs, etc there is a much bigger feeling of accomplishment where in a game like WoW you can max level in 2 weeks or less and raid gear yourself in another 2 weeks. Quick and easy to lose interest, at least in my own opinion.

FYI Alpha Test just ended and the beta client was just released on Friday.

My biggest issue with the game right now is the UI. Battle/chat/group chat is all in the same window. Even worse is the battle chat from people around you is included in your window. There is also a lag issue that I hope will be resolved in the beta.
