You don't understand. The product that you played, the things that you enjoyed in that game wasn't the game that was being developed for the 3 years of alpha/beta, what you played was SoE's debacle. Raid content and the players who enjoyed it weren't even a thought in the original vision that was VSoH. The only raiding content that they wanted was to have 2-3 groups get together to slay a dragon, that's it.
I beg to differ. Before Soe the game had so many bugs it was deemed unplayable. They fixed so much of the garbage. If it wern't for soe the game wouldn't of even survived. The idiot team of Signil and Brad's shit management killed the game. You can argue this all you want. This game had the most bugs out of any game I have ever seen. Soe's debacle was so much of fixing the broken shit it was ridiculous.

I remember looking forward to what Vanguard would do back in 2006/2007. I was an EQ1 player back then. My computer wasn't up to the job of running Vanguard, but I watched the forums and the news like a hawk. It was sad to watch how Brad and Sigil failed and how the whole thing was bought by SOE. Over the months I could see that the game was bleeding players. Forums were filled with post about bugs and hitching and similar things.

The thing about Vanguard that I liked was the idea that it appealed to a core gamer. It was a tough world. You could build a house and sail a boat. Something like UO 2 might have been. That's what I wanted. But over the years I could see how that vision was simply out of reach. First of all, they couldn't afford it. Secondly, SOE has a habit of making all of its games the same. Lastly, while SOE is good at keeping a game from dying, they're not good at making it great. They don't handle mudflation well. They will jump ship from one thing to another. They're shifty. They're like shape shifters. At heart, they're businessmen and it shows in their games.

I hate the modern idea about getting to max level. I think it's like a plague that has infected the industry and its players. We need to go back to the idea of the journey being important, not the destination.

I play Wurm Online. It's as close to what I want as I can find. HOwever, it's missing some things, but it's damn good. HOwever, it's not a game that's easily picked up and played. For a game like this to work in the mainstream, it'll be streamlined and the whole works. Unfortunately, that's what kills it for me. I don't want streamlining, I want depth. I want so much goddamn depth that I can't grasp it. No more golden paths. I want the mystery of not having the answers and not having the direction laid out for me beforehand. I don't want no rails or protection. Let me make mistakes and suffer terrible deaths. Get out of my way. So many games are sissified. I don't know how else to describe it. They're too afraid to let you suffer your mistakes.

I played at release and did nothing but crafting and diplo because they were both so different than any MMO I had ever played. The idea of going out and doing 1,000 dumb quests and killing a million rats and bats is not really that appealing anymore. Fuck guys, now I gotta go redownload VG...

I love it!

I started when it went F2P. It's a great game. It's shame it isn't more popular.

I played a sorcerer and thought it was great. Rangers are cool too since they can deal so much bow damage.

I just recently logged in and noticed I still had all my old characters. 44 de necro, 39dwarf warrior, and 37 desert human paladin. I might play a little here and there, but im gonna do it eq style, grind grind grind. I did log into my necro and it was fun fear kiting. I might check out the druid and see how much alike they are to eq druids.

Yeah this is a great concept that few games do that well anymore. Sucks to admit it, but I think WoW was great in that aspect, in vanilla and especially in LK. Early on, in some of the first few levels you were intimately involved in big picture stuff with Thrall or the LK himself. It wasn't just mindless leveling as you try to get to max level.

Read my posts, I'm not talking about what the game was at release nor am I talking about what the game was after SoE "patched it up" I'm talking about the game that was under development, the number of bugs in the game is completely irrelevant, both Intel and SoE rushed the game out and after it released the original direction of development was abandoned.

The expectations that had been set since the game was simply an idea on paper throughout it's alpha and beta phases were geared towards small group play, I know, I was there, others in this thread who were also there can back up my claims. I'd send you a link to the beta forums but they had been taken down about 3 years ago.
