Go with iskar, yea you have heard of the experience difference, but because Field of Bone is a great place for a newbie zone, and with Kurns right in it, you will find people to group with alot easier. Plus Kunark is packed.

Iksar is best for the min/maxer deff come velious and their AC bonus is no longer compisating for lack of plate and just a straight advantage as they nix the whole no plate thing in velious +

DE/Erud/Human/Iksar imo are true dark knights...I just dont see ogers/trolls/gnomes in the role of a dark unholy knight... rpwise

but if your min/maxing you have 2 choices, Troll or Iksar

I am a human :-P

How is anything other than ogre a min/max choice?

we could always have the eternal oger vs troll debate but all things considered you look for stuff that armor stats buffs etc cannot easaly negate at end game... even now- and deff come velious almost all races will be 255 across their needed primary stats... so you look at things you cant get.

innate regen
innate AC
innate slam/bash
innate frontal stunn immunity

pick and go, enjoy your fat sk

If you're serious about your character there's only one choice: ogre. Frontal stun immunity is so badass we had 60s contemplating rerolling for it.

Other than that you need to ask yourself is slam and regen worth 28% exp to me.

What about pet aggro and taunt not being classic? Ivandyr's hoop quest rate nerf unclassic? stupidly high resists on lower floor Seb mobs (to prevent charm exploits) classic?

They are already slipping and sliding on the slopes! I would consider iksar planar armor a fix just like everything else they changed... :P
This is a bit of a derailment but I'll address it because I agree with you to some extent and I want to highlight that.

RE: Pet aggro and Taunt - I consider that these are different primarily because they simply haven't been fixed yet. There is a lot on the plate even now, and they can't do everything at once.

RE: Stupidly hight resists on lower floor Seb mobs - I hadn't especially noticed that this is different from classic, though I admit I have not tried to charm in Seb (my chanter is 30). However, I will say that resists in general are not exactly congruent with how they were on Live. I think they are too high between levels 25 to 40 and probably too low outside of that.

RE: Ivandyr's Hoop - Here is where I agree. They have indeed done a dangerous thing here and this is not quite the only thing like it they have done. Intentional deviation from classic is indeed a slippery slope and devs have put one cautious foot on the brink of that slope. I don't agree that this was correct to do - I think it is a mistake - but it is their server and up to them. Hopefully they have the will power to keep the other foot on level ground, else, there will be problems.

However, I use the term "slippery slope" to mostly apply to player requests to change something to be more convenient from them. The devs may need or want or have to do this in very small number of cases. We are going to have to trust them to do that when appropriate (again, ideally, never). The rest of us should not even consider suggestions that deviate from classic. It is indeed a slippery slope. Let us limit it to the maximum possible extent, or else the whole theme of this server - and a laudable one it is - will be invalidated.
