i like this thread. my first rpg was dragon warrior, got it with my nintendo power subscription in 1988.

my favorite rpg's in no particular order:
castlevania: sotn
secret of mana (seiken densetsu 2)
dragon quest
legend of dragoon
chrono cross (chrono trigger is yet another good but overrated game, glenn just happens to be my love)
d20 modern
blue dragon
ffiv
suikoden
and if we're considering ocarina of time an rpg...metal gear solid :P

final fantasy IV was my favorite final fantasy. VII was ok, but it's a cookie cutter squaresoft rpg at this point.
final fantasy 8, x2, 11, 12, 13...sucked. imo they lost what made the ff series final fantasy. square just needs to hire akira toriyama for their next rpg and stop trying to release huge cinematic events, just fucking make a good game.
your opinion doesn't matter after you talk about how Chrono Trigger is overrated.

did you BEAT WILD ARMS 1?! I couldn't figure out what the fuck to do after getting that giant robot.
There was some big dome thing that I couldn't figure out. I tried everything and was lost forever and gave up.

How is chrono trigger not overrated?

None of the characters are very well developed or even engaging, there's little subtlety in the game and all of the side quests and encounters are completely spelled out for you with no room left for the player to figure things out on their own. In other RPG's in its era you actually had to think for more than 2 seconds to get by some of the more difficult parts in the game, whereas Chrono Trigger was generally way too easy. I also didn't feel the time travel element of the game was handled very well (I remember some chests where if you opened them in the past, you could still open them in the future for example... I know it's small but it's still kind of lame and makes the game less immersive).

I did really like that one world with the really advanced civilization that I think was around ~15000 BCE or something. That's probably one of my favorite parts of any RPG. The rest of the game seemed a lot less inspired though.

I've never thought of Chrono Trigger being rated so high in the first place. From everything I've ever seen/heard about the game, it's just a 'great game'. Anything less and it would be just a "meh, game" which hardly comes to mind when I think of Chrono Trigger.

Could be slightly overrated, but that could describe any game.

LOL the end of WildArms 1 - if your not ultra prepared and OP is very hard because you have to fuck around forever to figure out what the hell to do- for me I always hoarded those cure/heal all berries so I had a bunch and made it to the end-ish area with puzzles but there was a center room with a save/restore so you could make a little home base there and adventure out / reset etc as you figure it out....but yes walkthrough's are the best for that- also the part near the end where you have to go around the fucking ocean..gah.

Wonder how nicely the remake of WA1 does these things- I havent had time to make it past the prolouges in it lol- just finished the "main" characters and am doing the "treasurehunters" prolouge now- and imo the treasurehunter and his rat have the best backstory- I thought it was cool that you only saw it if you left your game on the title screen for a bit- when you got to that place in the actual game it was like "ohhh!!!"

also the battle system in all of the secret of mana games was super gay, and I found that whole star ocean secret of mana etc line to be terribly boring
