i don't even think good writers could come up with premises, they pretty much covered everything iirc, global cooling, global warming, nukes, asteroid impact (awesome ep), contagious diseases, systems of government...etc

I feel exactly the same way about White Noise. Read the novel in 1985. Don DeLillo. One of the main characters is a professor of Hitler Studies. They made a film version in 2022.
I can't watch that. It's not exactly amusing, when you remember a time when
professor of Hitler Studies made no freakin sense, and it was absurd.
I think this is a valid way to deal with culture. Food crisis? Soylent Green. Maybe think about how we think about each other. We can do better than "food."
That's a classic starting point when thinking about food crises. Humans: not food.
