Default Switching to compatibility mode without losing UI config and macros?

So the game runs fine except when I want to switch characters it crashes 90% of the time. I tried dgvoodoo and it did nothing so now I'm trying compatibility mode winxp sp3 and it solved it.

Only problem is I lost all my UI settings, macros, friendlist, whatever. So I started redoing everything and kinda went "f this" and when I disable compatibility mode I get all my settings back.

Not sure how that works. I know all those settings are kept in 2 ini files named after your characters in the EQ folder but where are the compatibility mode settings going and why isn't it using the same files? Is there a simple fix to this?

Thank you!

Ok figured this one out, will post the results here since I saw in a couple threads people struggled with this. This is on windows 11.

If you play the game normally, as in not in compatibility mode, it seems it doesn't run as admin and it causes problems being an old game and all so your UI files will be saved in this folder to circumvent some issues:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\p99fo ldername

If you play in compatibility mode it will save your stuff in your normal EQ folder since it doesn't encounter those problems.

So if you switch to compatibility you will have to go to the EQ folder in virtual store and copy your char UI/settings files back to your original EQ folder.

Thanks for reporting back on your progress!

I've added a note about combining admin/compatibility modes to https://wiki.project1999.com/Tech_Su...atibility_Mode (and while I was there I improved the docs for both modes, and added an image for one).

Hopefully it will help others with the same issue in the future.

Thank you for this thread, this helped me fix my UI problems after switching to compatibility mode to hopefully reduce or prevent crashing after camp.

Smile Maybe a little more help...

I had crashing problems recently logging in, blank server screen, game freezing at random etc.....
Out of desperation I unplugged my router (power and data) plugged back in. and all has been good since then.

To switch to compatibility mode without losing your UI config and macros, back up your settings first, use profiles if available, and ensure the program supports retaining configurations. After switching, check if the settings remain intact and restore from backup if necessary.
