I just remembered something that happened a few years ago today.

Some of my school friends I played EQ with RMTed a bunch of plat onto my shaman and used it to buy my character a horse as a birthday gift. Very kind of them, but I wish they got me a LoY newt [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.].

Okay, not classic era, but RMT happened.

As I see it:

Pros:

- Instances to avoid raid scene
- Better LFG tools (i think?)
- Modern group xp bonuses which makes grouping faster xp than solo/duoing

Cons:

- Luclin models / new zone revamps
- RMT via kronos
- Other non-classic elements

Basically, Phinigel is EQ Lite. Nothing wrong with that if you have limited time and want something easy to play but not at all the classic experience.

Plus, you know once the server progresses past POP the population will tank - much like it did historically.

I can say for a fact that it was rampant. Even in classic EQ. I first heard of RMT when a friend of mine started playing the game in 99 and promptly bought a Ghoulbane for 100 dollars for his paladin. Shortly thereafter I heard of another friend who bought a Sharkbone Warhammer for over 150 dollars for his shaman.

RMT was a real thing. Sadly.

Auto loot system is very nice for being lazy
Auto combine system is very nice for being a lazy tradeskiller

I just didn't like that their EXP code so much favored grouping and penalized soloing.

soloing is a fun way to test the limits of your characters gear, abilities and critical thinking

some of my favorite moments are when I see a named id like to kill in a pretty dangerous spot and you have to analyze how the heck can you not only get to it, but slay the thing without getting yourself a corpse in a hard to recover place

I liked the amount of fungi tunics drummed up in seemingly no time after kunark, classic was fun but got rough with short tanks and no regen lol. Overall it seems like they've made a better attempt this time around with putting in/taking out proper elements for xpacs, though it's definitely far from classic (esp. W/revamped zones and all)

RMT was classic as hell. When I finally gave up EQ Live for good after PoP I sold my (top end raiding) account and plat for over $1000, which was a fat chunk of change to 17 year old me. I'm still baffled that anyone would pay that much money for a video game account.

That said, I think RMT is a bad influence on the game and community and I'm really glad that P99 takes such a hard stance on it. I really dislike how RMT has even been formalized and officially sanctioned in a lot of new games, but I can see why game devs would want their cut instead of leaving that money lying on the table if enough people are willing to pay for pixels.

But what I REALLY don't understand is stuff like TF2 hats and DotA items that have zero tangible benefit that people pay tons of money for. At least with EQ accounts and rare items you're buying a thing that can DO something.

first month of EQ people were selling accounts straight up on Ebay. It used to be fun to search "Everquest" and compare your items to what people were listing them for( like baseball cards )

In fact my friend sold his crappy bronze geared lvl 34 cleric with a screaming mace for over 100 dollars. This was a big deal for a 16 year old back then. It was beyond dumb though bc that cleric was one of the first to lvl 30 on the server and he was playing with the 'trailblazers' of the content. After selling the account, the dude never got another character past lvl 35 in his history.

the end.
