The flu kills, all depends on how infected you get and your bodies response to it.

lol exactly. most people don't realize these things are also constantly evolving.

Bad comparison, but parasites for example have up to 60,000 more genes than a person. Some of these things that you would think are basic are way more advanced. Or, are the building blocks of life.

have no idea why a parasite genome would be double in the number of genes than a human. Probably less efficient genes and processes? IDK haven't reasearched it.

The male chromosomes genes get lower and lower every year (forget exact number, but men have lost at least 6-8 genes over the past 100 years) And we still have some manly fucking men out here, just proves that the number of genes don't mean shit.

Didn't even tip your fedora. Informational lackey status achieved.

# of genes doesn't really have anything to do with complexity of an organism above a certain threshold, and a larger amount of genetic material is no guarantee the organism is actually coding or expressing a greater number of proteins due to variations in alternative splicing / gene regulation. Onions have like 5x the number of genes we do, and it really isn't any more complex of an organism than we are. Especially parasites, which typically lack many of our more sophisticated organ systems and breadth of enzymes/proteins.

And the simple answer as to why genome size varies so wildly is because, in larger organisms, there is very little selective pressure on the presence of large amounts of "junk" or noncoding DNA, so organisms that accumulate a large amount of noncoding DNA get to keep it. Beyond that, I think it's a mystery.

This coming from the guy who referred to MMA as, "sweaty men wrestling in panties." Is "mourning" your rub-n-tug reference?
