Historically accurate it's not, but historically authentic it is. Most historical movies/shows are often far from authentic. This is one of the reasons you see this series mentioned on most geek entertainment sites (most geeks like history), while nerd sites wait for the comic book [You must be logged in to view images. Such as Ragnar was never at the raid on Lindisfarne (though did authentically happen), but he was likely at Paris. But if he were in the Paris raid, he was never baptized there, though that did happen I believe near Rome, and not Ragnar but with another named Hastings who was with Bjorn, and infiltrated a Roman city after being declared dead and entered the city inside a coffin. Spoiler alert: Ragnar won't die in Paris. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

The show also includes some of the Viking mysticism, but not too heavily. Like Harbard is supposed to be the walking embodiment of Odin. That's why Floki got so excited when they mentioned him since Floki feels closer to the gods than to the other Vikings. Harbard did some magic on Ragnars colicky baby to make him stop crying and then walked away.

As far as Ragnars ending, it could be in the show at some point, hard to say. But one thing for sure, Ivar the Boneless will avenge his death (historically anyway); part of why he was considered so brutal as in the way he did it. No one knows why he was called the Boneless, some accounts say he was carried on a shield often. In the show he is portrayed as having been born without bones in his legs or something, though impossible. He had either a bone disease at birth, was a large big-boned man, or suffered from impatience hehe... or maybe just a lack of interest in that.
Anyways these guys were bad ass, ruthless, and the show tries to portray them that way w/o the modern social creativity stuck into most historical-ish shows to make them seem more relevant to today's social engineering with the whitewash effect. Many of these guys settled into western Europe, make up part of the intermingled western bloodlines. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Hmmm... inaccuracies between the show and the vikings. As far as for the battlefield, the most glaring inaccuracy is their armor, or lack-thereof. In the show, they seem to be more armored in the fashion of the Celts. The Celts were known to run screaming into battle pretty much nekid, and quite successfully as like wild berserkrs.
In the show, they are even less armored than the Romans, which were armored well in the front (girth hoops), used shields, but were nekid at the back. Vikings would wear heavy padding or if affordable (or looted) they would wear chain. But they shared a bit of tactics with the Romans nonetheless, however a little more armored in general on the retreat side of things. [You must be logged in to view images.
