I recently learned that Toolboxes sold in Ak'Anon and Steamfont only cost a little over 1gp while Backpacks cost over 5gp. You can buy 5 toolboxes for a little more than the cost of one backpack.
Toolboxes weigh the same as Backpacks and have the same number of slots, but will hold GIANT objects while Backpacks only hold LARGE stuff.

Medicine Bags hold the same as a backpack, but it costs a little over 1 plat. The benefit is that it only weighs 0.4 wt instead of 3.0. This is really useful for any characters with low str like int casters. If you carry 8 bags it's 3.2 wt instead of a hefty 24.0 and it is worth the initial investment of roughly 5g more per bag to be able to hold so much more VT.

If only tradeskill containers actually ate the items when you misclicked "combine"

Then there would be real risk v. benefit to them over normal bags.

You can bank through the wall in OT outpost even when KOS (I knew about this in Freeport etc, but not OT until someone showed me this last weekend!!!) Excellent for hammering, and putting hammer in bank (so you dont get boned when you die in HS and dont have a hammer to get back to your corpse)

Didn't they use to do that on live, the large sewing kits?

Until April 2001, any container with a combine, including the stationary ones in cities. Made trade skill recipe experimentation very, very costly.

'Combine' container changes:

We've made a change to 'combine' containers. In order to prevent people from accidentally destroying items, all containers with a 'combine' button will not combine any items that do not form a complete recipe. This will be a huge boon to craftspeople all across Norrath. But this removes the only drawback to using trade containers as backpacks. Their reduced weight and often greater carrying capacity made them more desirable as bags, with the compensating risk that you might just lose something if you made a mistake.

We will be increasing the weight of portable 'combine' containers somewhat. Where some of these containers weighed under 1 pound, they will now weigh as much as 4 pounds for the largest sewing kit.

Along with this we are making a change to tailor made backpacks. In case you didn't know, most tailor made packs have a built in weight reduction of 5%. We are raising that to 10%. We will also be displaying the weight reduction of all containers with the information shown on a right click.
