Yeah, some of the pets could hit magic at 12 and others couldn't.. just the higher level ones could.. I initially learned if it was a good pet by seeing if it could hit a wisp. If not, I'd gate, and then zone back to try again.. Later I learned to see if the pet would get agro from a bear. If yes, he was too low.. If not, he was high enough to fight the wisps and scarecrows. (This was in West Karana)

I believe the only level 12 pet that can hit magic is when you actually summon a level 12 pet.

There are 4 levels of pets that can be summoned at level 12.

The way you tell the power of your pet is by looking at the peak amount of damage he can do with 1 swing. This rule applies to all pets of all classes though the Mage's fire pet level of power can be denoted from the amount of damage his fire shield does to a target.

At 12th a summoned pet can do either 10, 12,14 or 16 points of peak damage with one single hit. The pet that is able to hit magic targets is the pet able to hit for 16 points. So, to know whether or not your 12th leveled summoned pet can hit magic or not, just have him engage an easy target and see if he hits for 16 with one of his hits. If he does, that is the one that can hit magic based targets. Regretfully this is the only pet that can hit magic based targets when you use the 12th summoning spell.

A simple fix for this would be to up the pet's level by one, which in turn would mean a pet could potentially hit for 12,14,16 or 18 damage. This allows a player to have a 50/50 chance to summon a pet able to hit magic creatures and also would balance out the strength of the pet for the level with the 16th pet. This is important for Necroes who like to hunt willowisps or lesser mummies which are level appropriate targets at 12th.

Just wondering, do you know what the damage table is for all pets at each level or is there a table for that?

I ask because probably the most annoying thing I have found as a necro is the inabilty to determine the level of my pet.

I do not know the damage table for every level. Best thing to do is to just keep an eye on the damage output. Usually there is a 4 level range so expect to see 4 different Peak damage swings.
