kid i worked with a few years ago was into magic, hed go in and sit for literally hours waiting for anyone to come in to play(while I stared at the floor trying not to kill myself).

Thankfully that sort of shit is not popular around here. I think there is 2 shops in the "big" city that host weekly tournaments, which are basically the same 6 guys circle jerking over their miniatures.

sometimes living in maine isnt all bad

We have this group of old men who play "Flames of War" its basically warhammer based off of world war 2.

I change my mind they are the most annoying people I see at game shops.

They are 40+ year old fat men who have never served a day in the military in there life talking about how THEY would win the war in the middle east (Aka Nuke them all and cover the bombs in pig blood)

They scream and yell at each other and eat cheap hoagies from the store across the street all while saying how they should kill the Muslims/arabs/illegals etc.

We had to schedule Flames of War to a random Wednesday because it has no overlap with other games because they are the worst.

It's not the competitive attitude in general that I find unappealing, if I have a deck that I believe can carry me well I'll obviously play to win, it's the attitude that competition is the life of the game that bothers me.

These days it's certainly unrealistic to ask for any amount of good sportsmanship in anything higher level then FNM, but it doesn't have to be that way and it definitely wasn't that way in the past.
Apparently you have never played on the Pro Tour. Pretty much everyone there is a good sport. I have yet to encounter anyone do anything shitty on the Pro Tour. I did however watch a guy try and rule lawyer something but quickly recant once he realized a judge was watching. The highest level of magic is usually where everyone is the coolest. People earned the right to be there.

Yes, and they have made pretty decent money doing it. Not like millions of dollars like the WSOP players, but a few of the best players have made 300K+ over their magic pro days. They also get free air travel and appearance fees to locations all over the world, just for playing the game.

Don't try to fool anyone here please, there are less than 5 players in the 20 year history of the game who've made that much money in their entire professional 'careers' and it's taken them all well over a decade of consistently playing the game well.

Most of the 'professionals' don't even hit 10K in prizes a year (less than a rookie minor league baseball player makes) and wouldn't be able to afford to keep playing the game if not for the sponsors.

Hell, their MVP players aren't even proud of what they do. Look up John Finkel and how he refused to even tell his girlfriend how much he played the game and got dumped after she found out.

She wasn't his girlfriend. They went on one date. Jon leveraged his winnings into a venture capital company.

David Williams transitioned his Magic skills into poker and made $3.5 million at the WSoP in 2004 and another million in other circuit events.

Do any of your hobbies pay $10K a year?
