Default Everything should be no drop

(disclaimer) This not related to the current P1999 servers, so I guess it's off-topic. Can't move the thread sowwy.

(In another thread) Talking about killing wisps ad infinitum to earn plat to use at player vending machines in EC got me to thinking.

In my opinion, EQ is about adventure and treasure hunting. But soloers quickly learned they could earn plat by "farming" coveted gear and selling it to others. Farming grew to the exent that other players were prevented from getting the drops on their own.

I think a server where everything is no drop would be awesome. That way players can adventure in a world free from these GD farmers. This would also make tradeskillable gear more valuable. It would also all but eliminate RMT.

Ok this is off topic, but hey.

Didn't SOE try to implement some "feature" around Luclin timeframe where if you killed a green-con mob it wouldn't drop loot, a feature which they then quickly removed? Am I remembering this right?

Trivial loot code, yes. I thought that sounded cool, but a lot of people didn't like it.

Wait, what?

It would make tradeskilled items more valuable?

Explain to me, a barbarian shaman, how I would obtain a set of resist gear jewelry if it was all nodrop.

The assumption is tradeskilled and perhaps vendor items would be among the only not no-drop items.

Alternate rule set servers can be fun, but I doubt we will see it here. For the record TLC was not well received the community back in live...

Ugh. No drop items lead to a deterioration of community.

Where the f*ck are all these "p1999 needs to do this" posts coming from? Shit isn't changing people!

Maybe I'm bitter. But I get tired of the community forum "suggestion box" It's here, it's free. Play it if you like, move along if you don't.

I'm all for discussing things, and having good conversations over what makes things better than others. But some things can be a broken record.

Ah, assumptions. My favorite.

Droppable items are half the motivation for a wide range of group camps, and a fluid economy is half the appeal of an MMO like Everquest.

How depressing would it be to grind out levels at a camp while item after item rotted away? Would you suddenly have a spectator crowd of 6-10 people waiting for rot drops and crowding your camp, asking for buffs and getting angry when the guy that just showed up rolled and won a drop when they've been there waiting for hours?

How is that any better than item farming?

How depressing would it be to turn level 45, but have absolutely no access to your Kunark class gear because nobody's going to group a level 45 at disco or crypt?

Think of being a druid who turns 57 before they land a pair of ES arms that could have been used at 45, or a shaman who could have been clicky-buffing for ten levels before they finally got into a camp with Jaundiced drops.

Think of all the aggro weapons that make a tank a better player, but are now unobtainable at the levels where they make the most difference.

Negatives outweigh the positives, at least in terms of EQ's overall platform.
