Had great incentive to pvp and it seemed that not too much was broken. Great dev support and allowed boxing. What went wrong?

People don't want to play on a custom server.
This should be like the first bullet point established before one line of code is even written, but it seems to baffle lots of people anyway. WHY ISN'T THE SMALL AUDIENCE OF PLAYERS WHO SEARCHED FOR CLASSIC EMULATED EVERQUEST INTERESTED IN MY CUSTOM HARDCORE EZEXP BOX? It doesn't matter if it's well done. There has to be demand for what you've created.

If people like classic and hate custom, why do so many people cry about slow exp, no boxing, no leaderboards etc?people are going to get a reality check when it takes 6 months to get to 50.

The server was doing pretty OK until VZTZ and Red69. These are what players wanted and headed for en masse, then subsequently abandoned in the same fashion.
I'm not sure what will be totally different this time around besides stricter policing of cheaters (I admit this is a big deal) and much, much slower leveling. I personally enjoyed the idea of "points" for PvPing, getting rewards, and feeling incentivized to do something besides traintraintraintrain. I think there are a lot of people that know classic EQ to a tee and have been playing it for several years (some for close to a decade), the idea of losing some of that edge is a turn off for them. Also smashed your faces.
