Default Starting up

Hi everyone! I’m coming back to eq. I haven’t played since I was just a little guy back in the early 2000’s. I’ve decided that I have a dnd/mmo itch and nothing has scratched it so far. I’m hoping that EverQuest can do that for me.

I rolled Eleytu, a gnome magician on Green. He’s currently level 7 working to get to 8 in the steamfont mountains. I’ve been collecting bone chips (hopefully I can sell them soon).

Just wanted to say hi and I hope to see you in game!

Welcome! Magician is a pretty good class up to 50 for sure! I don't think they are that bad beyond 50, but not the power houses they are before.

P99 has a bunch of little quarks you may want to research on your own time - bugs you might see them as which are really just the way things were in classic (for the most part).

As a mage for example, your XP might be going up every kill, but remember if you do not do 51% of the damage to the NPC you are fighting your pet "steals" half the XP.

Other ways around that penalty are:
-grouping (pet steals none but you split with duo person or group)
-Dismissing or reclaiming your pet before the mob dies (more frequent at high lvls) as then the source of your pet's dmg is gone, so you doing one nuke to finish it off should finish it and give you full xp.

Enjoy yourself! P99 is a blast!

I've always wanted to do a Mage / Necro or Mage / Mage duo, it just seems like it would be so ridiculously fast churning through mobs with your pets.

Thanks for the info. I actually just figured out about the xp situation for my pet lol. I was wondering why it was taking so long (I know it takes awhile anyway, because EQ). I will definitely keep in mind the reclaim pet trick later on in leveling up.

If you ever get discouraged, try to remember that, at a certain point, most blue mobs will give you about one "tick" of XP, which is 1/5th of a bubble, of which there are 5 bubbles per level.

This means that, so long as you can comfortably kill some blue mob solo, you only need about 125 kills per level. The average respawn rate of enemies in non-instanced areas is 6 minutes and 40 seconds, which works out to be about 14 hours per level if you're killing just one spawn every time it respawns.

I think people often perceive that leveling is much slower in EQ than it really is, and I think it's often exacerbated by trying to optimize something that doesn't need to be optimized and shooting themselves in the foot. Being in a group of 6 in a dungeon is still setting your kills per level to around 800-1000 monsters per level. But monsters respawn about every 18-22 minutes in a dungeon compared to the 6m40s of outdoors. So the XP bonus for being in a dungeon is often useless and not worth it because you could have killed far more and far easier mobs with less hassle outdoors in the same time frame while you're just sitting there waiting for your pocket of mobs in a dungeon to respawn.

I don't know if this actually helps, but when I look at an empty XP bar, I really just think: "This is just 125 kills" and it seems a lot smaller then.

Finding a duo with another pet class can solve the XP steal issue, if you're grouped then you're both killing quickly and while you're halving the XP with your new friend you're at least doing it with twice the damage [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
