Game Mechanics: Charred Bone Key not working in Befallen

I am making my way through Befallen. I have killed the female shadowknight and am trying to get to the Ogre. I looted the key. It is in my inventory, but the door says I don't have the correct key.

Don't you have to have the key on your cursor when you click the door?

You say the key is in your inventory. Are you putting it on your pointer when you click the door? Seems like a silly question, but you never know.

Then the first door is allowing you to open the door without the key or the cursor.

The first locked door (SE corner of entrance area) required me to have the splintered wooden key on my cursor to open.
