![]() Introducing myself to the community.
I am completely new to Everquest (except for some very recent dabbling on the live server), currently waiting for a hard copy of Titanium I found on ebay. I have been reading up on some of the classes looking for something I like but also practical for my needs as a player. For the foreseeable future I will probably be playing solo with limited time for grouping on the weekends. If anyone has played GW2 I really liked the Guardian class. From Lotro I enjoyed the Captain. Classes I am considering for my first foray into Everquest: Gnome Magician - I really like the idea of being able to summon items for personal and group use. Gnome ability to create items is also very interesting to me. Are these summoned/crafted items just flavor fluff or do they serve a very real practical use? Barbarian Shaman - Seems like caster version of a paladin. Cleric - I am a huge Warhammer and Warhammer 40k and the imagery of a cleric wading into battle just speaks to me. Paladin - Same reasons as the Cleric. I have read that Druids are widely regarded as very new player friendly class. I am curious about its gameplay. From what I understand this class is a shapeshifter. Maybe picky but I have never been crazy about shapeshifting. Is this a major part of Druid gameplay? Looking forward to playing this game, especially given the unimaginative junk currently on the market today.

![]() Gnome magician - This is a very pet focused class. Your main strength is that you get powerful pets that are both your offense and defense. This is a good solo class. The summoned items are nice, but not game breaking.
Shamans are one of the stronger classes on EQ, most especially at high levels. At max level they are arguably the best soloers. You are the king of buffs and debuffs, you can heal half decently, and you have some decent lines of damage over time spells. My alt is a shaman and I have solo'd him up to level 50 so far. Clerics are perhaps the worst solo class in EQ. You will be highly dependent on finding groups to level after a certain point. You can do some soloing against undead, but it is limited. Good news is clerics are highly sought after. Everybody needs more clerics, always. But you won't be doing much meleeing once you get above a certain level, so your vision of battle cleric is out. Paladins are tanks. Groups always need tanks too. Warriors are considered "better" at max level because of their disciplines, but paladins have their place. They can get agro much faster and more reliably and have some spells and LoH. Druid shapeshifting is not a major part of their gameplay. The will mostly charm animals to do their damage, or snare kite a mob while their dots kill it. Very outdoorsy character. They are the worst healers of the three healing classes. They are one of two characters that get port spells at higher levels, so you will be an EQ taxicab if you want to be. Play what sounds fun, you can always reroll another character after a few levels if it doesn't really feel right. Welcome!

![]() I've leveled many race/class combinations across different servers and barbarian shaman is my favorite classic leveling experience. I'd be happy to offer advise on any new character you roll though. Welcome to EQ!

![]() Having played many characters, I can assure you that my favorite of all is Barbarian Shaman.
Its a beast. Strong. Wise. Powerful. Indipendant. Just a great character to play. Fun to gear. Just difficult enough to make it seem impossible, but not difficult enough that it is. Your #1 goal is HP stacking, so with every item you see some straight up visible gains in raw HP and its very satisfying. Like you said, its a lot like a caster, but can take hits from mobs like a melee.. Bonus points for armor graphics, can wear some cool looking gearz! Also the Hate armor is like fine steal, best armor graphic in the land. Very cool class. Would play again. Much recommend. Such doge pet/companion too.

![]() In short, Shamans are an amazing class; though with a couple caveats. My main is a 53 Shaman and it was the first class I rolled on p99, so this is just my experience.
First off, they are kind of terrible until level 24, at which point they become incredibly self-sufficient. Reason being that level 24 is when Shamans get their two flagship spells that will carry them through the rest of the game: Regeneration and Cannibalize. If you can push through to 24, then you will be greatly rewarded (just don't give up!) Second, the Shaman has an exponential power progression, meaning your relative power will increase as you level; slowly at first, but then begins rocketing up (Once you have Spirit of Wolf, Haste, Regeneration, Cannibalize, and Slow you become unstoppable). By the mid-40's, you are essentially irreplaceable in groups. This is in quite stern contrast to classes like the Druid, which get great spells early on and are pretty great to solo with, but are actually rather undesirable for end-game dungeons (however Druids get the ability to teleport other players, which is an easy way to make a lot of platinum for gearing a 2nd character). I made a Barbarian Shaman and haven't looked back. Once you get through the early levels and reach late-20's/early-30's, you will start to see your power increase drastically. By level 50 you are one of the best solo classes, while also being one of the most sought-after classes for group (the "Insects" line of spells can slow enemy attack speed by 75%, making it one of the best debuffs in the game). tl;dr: I rolled a Shaman and once you get through the shitty early levels, the floodgates open and you rocket to the top of the "Must have" list for groups, while also being able to solo practically anything. It's true that the end-game spells are super expensive, but that won't be an issue for quite some time and by then you already have some of the best spells in the game (Slow, Haste, Regen, Canni, etc.). EDIT: Oh yeah, and they even get a pet too, which you can then buff with your insane melee buffs. It's actually kinda ridiculous now that I think about it. And you can also turn yourself into a giant Bear. Seriously, the list just goes on.

![]() Thank you very much for responding to my post, offers of in game assistance, and welcoming me to the game.
I think I will create a both a Gnome Magician and a Barbarian Shaman, switching between them for testing to see which I like best. I do have some extra questions. Gnomes can see through walls? Is this some type of racial ability? Are the Guides in the Gnome starter city just for show? I haven't been able to get any directions from them. Like I said, thank y'all so much for responding.
