Starting Over!

Howdy guys!

I played here some years ago, got to the 50's and quit (like a lot of people do I hear!) but now I'm back! I have no details to my previous account and don't really have any desire to play on my old toon anyway. I just came from Ragefire on Live, it's an absolute mess, I was able to level 4 characters to 50 in under 3 weeks with a full time job as well as gearing them in full planar a week and a half later... Bottom line is, it's full of boxers which I hate, it's super easy, which I hate and there's a lot of drama, which I hate.

So since I've got the EQ bug again I'm coming back! Hopefully get to that infamous 60 this time and do some raiding (hello european guilds??). I do have a couple of questions to ask which could alter my choices starting up though:

1) My knowledge of damage tables has been skewed by the horrendous balance of progression servers, how does Ranger dps fair in comparison to Monk and Rogue?

2) Velious is coming in less than a month, are the XP penalties for hybrids being removed right away or later down the line?

3) The new spell lines and discs for hybrids are super sexy, are they available upon Velious release also?

4) I see Gnoll Fang quest has been nerfed... that shit was OP back in the day. Has any other xp quests or zones rose to the surface after the nerf I should consider for newbie zones?

5) I detest intelligence casters but am willing to play most others, is there a lack of any class in particular? (I'm leaning toward playing a Paladin/Ranger which you probably figured out with my previous questions).

6) Any other updated patches/information I should know about or could be handy?

Appreciate anyone willing to spend 5 minutes to answer some of these questions!

I cannot answer all of those, but...

1) I play a rogue with typical gear for mid-30s and still out-DPS some twinked rangers. The same seems to be true for monks, who have better DPS than rangers. On the other hand, I have grouped with some very good rangers who held aggro and stayed alive.

4) Gnoll Fangs quest seems okay to me, so unless they nerfed it in the last couple of patches...

5) If you want to play an uncommon class and like paladins, I have some really good news for you... (things might change once the hybrid xp-penalty disappears though)

6) The wiki is your friend. It's not always 100% accurate, but it's more accurate than most resources still left on the internet.

Thanks for the responses. So the XP penalty is definitely being removed then? That's good to hear, will sway my decision of class. I'll have a look at europa, see if they have a guild page to see their requirements!

The change in hybrid class xp penalty was not put into effect along with the release of Velious, it came with a patch later on in the expansion. With that said you should expect a similar timeline over here.

The Hybrid penalty should NOT be removed at the start of Velious. Should be about a month or two into it. Who knows what the timeline will be on here but I would guess it will be sooner than later. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

So Rangers are pretty much equal to a Warrior DPS wise without Disks. Behind a lot to a Rogue, about 65% of a Monk, and above a SK and Pally. So middle of the road. But will be a damn good class in Velious once the XP penalty comes off. Tracking is worth it alone to have one. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
