Default New Player Saying Hello

Hi guys, I just started a few days ago after a 12-13 year break from EQ. My highest character back then was a 56 troll warrior.

I tried out a number of class/race combos over the past few days, and I've settled on a Wood Elf Ranger. From what I've read, rangers aren't loved a whole lot, but it was the one class that I never played on live, so here goes nothing. The players have been great - one even gave me a few ring mail pieces today. It's a refreshing change from modern MMOs.

It's good to be back [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Welcome to the project Talas! Ranger is a fantastic class and with the Velious xp penalty removal patch about 3 months away you will see the hybrid hate dissipate. It is only really embraced by a small group of irrationals though. Others may raise concerns, but generally just out of ignorance of the mechanic and a perception that the "shared" penalty means all group members get a 40% penalty if they group with you. That is not how it works at all. Basically you just take a larger chunk of the pie than everyone else, which at low levels really just makes you consume xp as if you were a couple levels higher.

Master the use of harmony, snare & root for first class pulls & CC and players will love you ^^

Good luck!

Welcome Talathar, if you need an enchanter around 20ish, let me know. I'm always looking to group up. My char's name is Shnate.

Masked, I just have to ask this. Essentially taking a larger piece of the pie would mean that everyone else takes a smaller piece. I was under the impression xp per mob never changes, so wouldn't that mean everyone else is taking less xp because their slice is smaller? I have never grasped this concept 100%.

Yes, but it is not 40% less for each person as some people propagate/misunderstand. It works like this:

Suppose you have a mob that gives 12000xp. Now suppose you have a full group of players all the same level and with no xp penalties or bonuses. Let's also assume group xp bonus doesn't exist to keep things simple.

In this scenario each player would receive 12000/6 = 2000xp. The formula is actually based off total character xp, but since we are assuming everyone to be the same level that is irrelevant. Now if we have a hybrid w/40% penalty swap in for one of the other characters we end up w/ 12000/6.4 = 1875xp per person for everyone except the hybrid who receives 40% more or 2625. The xp of each group member is effectively reduced by 6.25% than if they were to group with a class with no penalty (priests, rogues and warriors).

Welcome Aboard. Yeah still a LOT of Ranger hate on here, but when Velious comes out end of Month they will be a lot better than now. Hybrid XP penalty goes away in a bit, the spell Fear Animals is great for Fear Kiting and Trueshot is great for Raids.

And their Tracking will be NEEDED in the Large Velious zones. Gear is cheap as heck for them. They just about give their weapons away on here. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Yes, they get less exp per mob. But it isn't a lot. People hear 40% exp penalty and think they are getting 40% less exp, which is no where near true.

Thanks for the welcome! I farmed up 14 stacks of bone chips as I leveled to 5 (I went to Butcherblock, which was way easier to navigate than GFay...) and sold one already, so I should have money for some low level ranger gear pretty quickly.

Looking forward to Velious
