Default Enchanter Specialization??

What should a Ench specialize in with spells? I mean one needs to go over 50, which type spell should it be?

Most Enchanter spells are alteration, including your mana hogs (haste, slow, charm etc.). While mez is conjuration, you're not generally mezzing enough to totally drain your mana and you always have the level 4 mez if you're having mana issues.

Anytime I see enchanters complain about mana issues, it's because of hasting a melee heavy group and charm breaks/recharming. Not mez.

The argument for conjuration vs. alteration is essentially whether it is better to save more mana over time (alteration) by reducing the cost of most spells, or to save mana in do-or-die situations where you are casting mez (conjuration).

I very rarely go from fm to oom casting nothing but mezzes. In a group, having that many mobs in camp means that your group is probably doomed anyway and the best that you can do is hope for an evac if you brought a porter. Generally, if there are enough mobs in camp that you have to lock them down long enough to run out of mana from full mana, you or your group will wipe before you can mez them all (assuming your mana pool doesn't just suck). On the other hand, I can recall several times where I was somewhat low on mana (30-40%) after rebuffing and then went lom or oom trying to crowd control shortly after.

An enchanter who specs alteration will save more mana over the course of a group/raid and will have more available to mez when shit hits the fan if they aren't normally fm. If they are, your spec won't matter much for the above reasons. Basically, situations where speccing alteration would save a group are much more common than those where speccing conjuration would. I'm sure some bro has a cool story about the time where they mezzed an entire train for 4 minutes or something and only pulled it off because they specced conjuration, but that's the exception, not the rule.
I went with Alteration and never looked back.

Yeah. Alteration is the way to go. Between alteration specialization and being decent about not needing to VoG the ENTIRE raid all at the same time, it should be relatively rare that your raid (or group, whatever) needs to hold up while you med, even if you're the only chanter.

And it's not just buffs either. Roots, charms, slows, dots, mem blurs... all alteration. With charms breaking more and with Velious on the horizon needing more boltrans casts, that'll be even more important.

Having played a chanter on Mac from 1-65, Alteration all the way.

The *ONLY* time I considered swapping to Conjuration was for the Rathe Council fight in PoEB where you need enchanters mez locking mobs for 3-4 hours on end... Sadly we didn't have enough bards to AFK mez them. And even then, it wasn't really worth it if you properly geared toward FT and mana pres on your mez.

In Classic-Velious there aren't many "endurance" raid encounters that would warrant a Conjuration specialization. Those came later with Shei / Emperor in Luclin and Rathe in PoP.

I generally agree that you're going to run out of mana a lot more often buffing. Your raid will either end up waiting on you or you'll be casting clicky haste.

There have been a few times when I've gotten low mana on a raid from nothing but mezzing, but a few twitches or mana taps will fix that.

And unless you run into an emergency where you have to AE mez that shouldn't happen in groups either. Either mobs are casters and you can tap their mana to keep going or they're non-casters and you can save mana by rooting them.
