Sanding Hickory

Anyone have any experience? I'm having an issue where no matter how much I try sanding with the tougher grit, more grains pop out, so that when I end up gritting up to 220+, the "exposed" surfaces get glassy but the divots left by the popped grain never feel the sand paper...

Yeah thanks. I've been looking at forums and shit but either they are too technical or dealing with some other problem.

..and i know that sanding hickory is something that HICKS do (coz thats where they got their name), and I know there are a lot of hicks on this server, so leave me alone. This is not RnF.

Doesn't look half bad, though you'd probably have had more luck using a lathe than sanding by hand (assuming thats how you did it because most people don't have lathes or access to).

yeah no i don't. it's just a machine lathed hickory dowel that i knocked out from 60 through 400 grit and then one coat of dark walnut danish oil, rubbed off in "teak oil finish" (both varnish/oil/solvent blends). It's curing. The shitty pictures don't do it justice.. you can barely make it out, but the heartwood/sapwood line goes down then ~1/3 line, and nicely stripes the stick.

I've always preferred a "flat" top. No cap nor rounded, its simple yet stylish due to the sanding/finish. Besides I've always liked the feel of a flat top in my palm.
