Default New here - Seeking some advice

Hey P99,

I just started here and I'm having a hard time choosing a class, what I'm considering is rogue, monk, and enchanter. Now, I've researched everything I can and I think I have a pretty good idea of how each one plays and how they work in a group/raid, but I still can't decide. So since I can't make a choice myself I figure I'll see what you guys think and then make a choice.

Welcome!

Rogue would be the easiest starting class if you have never played before, rogues are all about damage and really cant do much else. Once you hit level 20 or so soloing isnt going to be much of an option so your going to have to group all the way which isnt a bad thing we have a great community here! in groups youll be doing damage, some zones require you to open locked doors but not many, in case of a wipe you will probably have to drag them to a safe spot because rog hide/sneak is the best invis in game. Raids is basically the same you dps, you drag corpses when bad things happen

Monks are also great dps though I think it would be harder than a rogue for a starting player, having to pull for a group if youve never experienced the zones could be a challenge and when your on a server of veterans some people may not have a lot of patience. Monks are much better soloers and with mend/fd you can go a lot farther in levels in terms of solo. In groups monks pull mobs for the group to kill so you will be very active running in and out tagging a monster and bringing it back can be a lot of fun for the right person, on raids your pulling/dragging/training [You must be logged in to view images. Enchanter is going to be the most difficult for a starting player, they are difficult anyway. Enchanters can do pretty much everything you want. you can solo 1-60 and you would be the best class at camping mobs for items, enchanters can invis they can lockdown mobs so they cant attack or move they can charm mobs to fight for them they do damage damage over time they buff they get lots of fun illusion spells. In groups youll keep everyone buffed and keep mobs mezzed. if your puller gets to many or you have bad luck with repops youll need to lock those mobs down so they dont kill your group, if the situation is cool you do damage, nuking with spells or charming monsters whatever you can do.

Really depends on what you want to do, if you want to just kill stuff go rog if you want to kill but bring a little more to the table and have some survivability go monk. If you want the option to do anything anytime go enchanter.

Rhambuk has some good stuff, I want to add a little more on the group / solo aspects of each class.

Rogue: You're basically going to be at the mercy of where the groups are. Be prepared to be LFG or forming your own groups. Soloing is NOT an option at all after level 20 or so, like what Rhambuk said. However, a rogue's DPS is unrivaled and they are highly desirable in any group.

Monks: Similar to rogues, meaning that you will be mostly grouping, but you definitely have soloing capabilities with the right gear and in the right zone. Monks are arguably the best puller, and most traditional groups wouldn't pass up a monk. They have good utility and are often used as tanks. I soloed (albeit slowly) on Red99 with basically all leather gear well into my 30s. Level intimidation and bind wound!

Chanter: By far the most utility and soloing capabilities. Any group would want a chanter, traditional or otherwise. As a chanter, you can do the normal mez / buff, or you can hook up with some pet groups and charm, or you AoE farm with stun, etc. They have a lot of options.

Overall, soloability-- chanter > Monk > rogue

I want to hit on this stuff because it can be really frustrating as a melee only class like a pally / warrior / rogue to have 1-2 hours to play, only to spend 45 minutes of it LFG. Something to think about.

Once you get started, msg me and we can set up a time so I can give you some starter cash.

Enc Pro: great solo (if itemized), great grouper (without ANYTHING), desired in raids, farm anything you want for your alts, jewelcrafting, mezzing, ability to solo dungeon crawl areas incl. boss takedowns made for full groups at 60 (requires serious balls and/or insanity to initially attempt), secret techniques to discover for soloing, powerleveling, etc

Enc Con: will take some time to realize your potential, raids mind bogglingly boring buff bot and watching for tells, itemization late game very boring also (same for all non-melee.. its just not as cool or effective)

Rogue Pro: highest dps, always wanted in groups and raids, hide/sneak awesome, good itemization now and esp. in velious, people expect you to do nothing else but dmg (nice amount of freedom, low responsibility since your dmg flows effortlessly)

Rogue Con: nearly zero solo capability, no spells, not easy to farm items for alts later

Monk Pro: good now, pretty much OP in velious (they become able to tank and dmg simultaneously), wanted in groups for dps and pulling, feign death, incredible itemization potential, can solo a lot better than rogue counterpart

Monk Con: you'll have to figure out zones for pulling, but groups will be patient with you (only need to learn a zone once, right? eh), no spells, solo farming good but not comparable to enc, you'll compete for dmg with rogues but the 'equal' gear rog will outpace you

I guess I could go on but that's the basics from what I've seen.

BTW enc my all-time favorite class.

Doesn't take great gear for a 60 enchanter to solo basically everything in the game! Loraen never stopped talking about how shitty Tecmos's gear was when he was doing the solo challenge from 55-60.

A few hundred pp (EASY to get by level 15 or so if you're selling orc belts/scalps, bonechips, HQ pelts, etc) can get you +60-70 charisma gear, a few thousand pp (doable by 30-40 if you do some research on where to make pp while you xp! <3 the wiki's guides + gear database) can get you another +20 cha and some cheap gear for the rest of your slots. You're squishy, for sure, but it's not like a pimped-out enchanter can survive aggroing 4 HTing mobs in HS anyways, or survive bad luck with stun/root/mez/charm that is totally/mostly unaffected by gear.

Awesome gear for an enchanter only buys a little wiggle room (maybe 500 mana and 1 melee round worth of hp, at 60) compared to crappy gear.

Have fun with your enchanter, OP [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Yeah but Tecmos you have to admit it is one of the hardest classes to play well on here. I am not saying people can't learn it. But as a first class?? [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

As any melee, you're going to feel inferior when you have twink melee around. As an enchanter groups may not shun you, but they certainly aren't ecstatic about your presence until L16. L16+ it's smooth sailing--you can be doing next to no crowd control and they're fine with that as long as you keep up the buffs.

Best plat accrual classes are going to be enc/shm, but they both start out very slow--especially untwinked.

Rogues have been the FOTM lately. Which means if you go rogue, gear is going to be more expensive, and your gonna be going up against rogues with fungi's and epics. While most these will prolly just be soloing, you still might have issues getting an invite with so many rogues about. Personally I would suggest monk as the solo and utility is great compared to rogue...enchanter if you want a challenge.

I would not go with a Monk unless you really know the zones in EQ. The main job of a Monk is pulling and if you are not good at pulling, which you can learn somewhat soon, getting lost in zones sucks big time for you and the groups. And they are really not cheap to equip.

I would go Nerco, Mage, Druid. All good at looting with not a lot of plat to equip. Mage Necro really needs nothing but spells. Druid a few wis items. All three pretty easy to play. And all can solo well.

But play what you like. Long way to 60 on your first toon trust me. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] And welcome aboard.

I've decided enchanter is the class for me, feel free to message me and say hi if you see me around, name is Zeitraum.

I used to play EQ back during kunark -> planes of power but I largely don't remember much of anything as it was so long ago.

Thanks for all the great responses guys, really helped.
