Question Ideas on Making a Lite EQ Client?

So here's the situation... I've found I can run EQ from a USB Jump Drive pretty well. The only kicker is the size of the folder is 3.5GB. This really isn't a problem on my 16GB jump drive of course... but i'd still like to make the folder smaller if possible.

So is it possible to trim down the EQ Client/Folder to remove files not needed by Project 1999? Maybe zone files from future expansions that we'll never get to (beyond Velious)? Or does the Titanium Client "depend" on having ALL files active and available in order to even LAUNCH the client (even if they won't be used)?

Just curious if anyone has played with it... or has any ideas.

Thanks!

hmm, I have not tried this but it is a sound idea. There are literally hundreds zone files and other crap that p1999 never touches.

So, from running it off your jump drive, do you in theory have mobile EQ? Plug it into any computer and you are up and running?

Should work that way. Directx should handle any negotiations necessary to interface to the graphics card/media devices. Interesting idea if you don't have a laptop.

I don't believe the client will bother to look for anything unless it's using it; you should be able to remove all the extraneous zone files. Of course, the only way to find out is to try it out. If it does check to make sure all the files are there, try removing them but replacing them with blank files of the same name. That may be sufficient.

Let us know how this turns out! I'm interested. I have a 2gb flash drive that this would be great on.

Ya, I'd love to go over to a friends place with a jump drive and play a little EQ.

Yes - i plugged it into my work computer, and it ran without a hitch. Logged right in. Didn't even have to tweak video settings (although most of the time you will have to).
And you don't have to COPY it to the computer... run straight from the jump drive.

Yah as long as the PC can handle the requirements (you can run this on a pretty low powered PC) - then it will work straight off the Jump Drive without needing anything else. Just make sure to edit the shortcut as required by EQEmu (adding "patchme" to the shortcut)

Just drag and drop the folder from your home PC onto a Jump Drive and you are done. Nothing else needed. You can actually do this with most modern games. I was able to put World of Warcraft & Warhammer Online completely on my Jump drive and run them straight from there.

Now to figure out how to make it LIGHTER! [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
I think I'll play with deleting files and see what happens....

As a side note - if I can get this to work, and lighten the client significantly... i'll create a full guide w/ pics and post it up in the Tech Section & in the Library.

I'm assuming you want to be using a USB 2.0 connection though... In case anyone is using an older pc.
Or should it not matter?

I can't say for SURE - but I would imagine you will want a USB 2.0 connection... USB 1.0 is 12mbps vs USB 2.0 being 480mbps

Although, I think most PCs that still have USB 1.0 probably won't be able to run the EQ client anyways (or if it can, it will be laggy)
