Default Fishing doesn't work like it did on live

My fishing skill is 200. Back in the day on live, with a fishing skill of 200, I could buy 20 bait and expect to end up with 15-17 fish.

This morning, I bought 20 bait. 7 fish, 12 junk, and one lost bait:

Was the same way last night. Burned through 40 bait, didn't have much but a pile of junk at my feet to show for it.

I thought this issue would have been resolved more efishiantly.

Has Norrath suffered an ecological collapse? Where have all the fish gone?!

Back in the day 20% - 30% of results gave the message "You caught fresh fish!" and, amazingly, a fish appeared on your cursor. The "you caught something" emote results seem roughly correct to my memory, including the chance that it is a fish, but there's a whole mess of "You caught fresh fish!" missing from p99.

36 skill ups, multiple rods, 2 stacks of bait and I didn't catch a single fish.

Fishing was a viable way to gather food with basically no practice. It is a core everquest memory sitting on my shaman waithing for the Gwenavyne and hitting 9 skill with a bunch of fish caught and hadn't even learned about rods breaking yet.

Internet archive is currently down, but the following EQTC guide was updated in 2002, so slightly out of era. It sounds like it was written far earlier. It is one of the very first guides on the site (g=3)

"When I had a couple hours of fishing under my belt, and about 20 ranks in fishing, I made a profit of over 6 gold in half an hour. "

My character is now at 50 skill and he is still operating at a big loss due to broken rods, excessive bait loss and lack of catches, let alone fish.

https://wiki.project1999.com/Aglthin%27s_Fishing_Pole gave me good results. Wizzie it was worth the time to hunt near water and med/await spawns. Maybe the named rods dont break as often.
Foraged fishing grubs *seemed* to work well. Maybe memory faulty or rose coloured glasses. I dunno. Never used a collapsible pole.

Looked up fishing here and the % mods dont function but show on the rods.
Sounds more like im telling tall fishing tales mixed wiff bad memory modules.

TL;DR Id still fish even knowing this...
