The short answer is no, tradeskilling is not useful.
Look, tradeskills are fun, and I have nothing against them. Loramin has the 7th Shawl, and he's also a master blacksmith (working on grandmaster), so I'd be a hypocrite if I said "don't tradeskill". But the honest truth is that established servers like Blue/Green have lots of existing tradeskillers. Any* item you could want to get through tradeskills can be acquired far faster/easier by buying it from them, vs. gaining the skill to make it yourself. * With a few exceptions to prove the rule, such 7th Shawl https://wiki.project1999.com/Runed_Coldain_Prayer_Shawl (which you have to be a tradeskiller to get), or learning enough Pottery to make the Thurgadin Gate potion.

Where do you buy stuff on these servers? Is it the classic East Commonlands opening thing, or something else? How does one go about buying stuff at low levels, or you just muscle through or twink new toons? How would someone on their first char on 99 go about it?

Yeah we use the tunnel, sometimes arrange a transaction on discord or here and then log in your tunnel mule to make the trade.
Personally I would make my first character one of the classes that are effective with no gear as long as you can afford your spells. But if your heart is set on reliving your half-elf warrior main from back in the day, you can still make that work. The biggest mistake you can make is playing a class or race that you don't enjoy and then feeling that sunk-cost. I just think it's way more fun to play a gear-dependent class with gear. | ||
