Default necro pet question

So I just got 12 and got new pet killed a couple wisps had to log came back later tried to kill a wisp and had to fear kite and took a while. I believe is this because I need the high level pet to hit a wisp? Is this true? If so how can you tell if you have a pet that can hit a wisp? I spent a while tonight testing and got 3 in a row of green pets. That's a lot of mana and I had to med a while to test it so I could make sure I was at full mana in case the pet couldnt hit them.

I just I'm just looking for clarity on this as I've read a lot and tried searching but pet is too short for the search here so makes it hard.

Thanks for any help or info.

Lvl 1 necro spell Reclaim Energy
Reclaims the energy needed to maintain your pet, causing the pet to dissipate and restores the mana used to cast the pet times the current health percentage the pet is at (or very close to it).
Edit: extra info, this will help to reduce mana loss when summoning multiple pets.
And when you get to a lvl (says 33) quest for a mage focus item. Insta-cast reclaim energy.
For extra (fashion) points get the shovel of pons.
