Game Mechanics: Newbie items marked with a star should be soulbound

Newbie items (no drop with a *) would reappear in your inventory if you died at low levels. This was food, water, sword, maybe tunic etc.

This post says it was level 3 or below:

Before, we can get free food and weapon after death if we are L3 or below.
But after the server down for an hour maintaince last night, i cannot get
food, water or dagger for my L2 NEC (in PVP server). More worse, the newbie
food, water and the dagger in the corpse disappeared.

I shout to ask any player have such problem, one answer me that his has same
problem.

Now, I advance my NEC by fight as monk, Hand to Hand is skill level 9 now.
Hehe!!

Take care, other new players! JUST DON'T DIE. It is a nightmare than lost a
bubble of XP.

This post confirms at level 4 it stopped:

There are items that are out there that once you pick them up, you cannot drop them
or give them to anyone.. Your food and drink you start the game with are like that
(weapon also). Lore means that you can only have one of those items at one time, in
your bank or with you on your character.

BTW, you eat food automatically, and cannot starve to death but you get food back up
to lvl 4 when you get nothing when you die .
