Died after mob, no exp for kill?

This one's weird.

Just had a close fight with the Jailer in Karnor's Castle. I died, but prior to my death our group's druid looted a Baton of Faith from the Jailer, but I didn't receive exp first. Hopefully this screenshot will explain this weird bug better:
