Sounds cliche, but "whatever you want." Note that game is initially a bit harder for the "evil" races: Dark Elf, Troll, Ogre, and Iksar. Use the wiki to see what each class can do, and see what appeals to you.

Also /tell Serous in game should you need some help. I hear he is partial to aiding young wizards :P.

I hope you mean you made a windows 98 virtualbox rig. And that ~VMware running on an operating system greater than XP. Then again it's not really foolproof as it's still accessing the network (if using the network e.g. for games) which can still be a vulnerability across your network including your VM host machine.

I play lots of old games, I've had no real problems with most of them on host machines with Windows installs newer than XP and modern Linux distros such as Ubuntu though a bit more challenging there.

Anyway, as for EQ here, it works perfectly fine on any modern windows system. If you have any real issues, you can grab a copy of WinEQ 2.x lite edition which is legal here and I highly recommend if having an real issues.

If I had to relearn the game, I'd want to roll a druid. It's a relatively forgiving class. The guides here on project1999 are great for whatever you need and in general I've found the server population to be friendly and helpful. For someone enjoying EQ for the first time, my advice would be to be patient. Con everything you see and always take the safe fight, get cocky and this game will make you pay. It will erase hours of your playtime quicker than you can imagine. The challenge is rewarding if you're patient enough to learn the game.

Human and Erudite might be a bit tougher for a new player, as they have no night vision. I would second Druid as a good choice for first class. That was my first character back in the day... well, excluding my ranger who spent his entire existence trying to figure out Kelethin before he fell to his death.

I would say just get out there, and group up with other players. Once you see the other classes in action you will get a better idea of which class best suits your play style.

On P1999, night blindness isn't nearly the handicap that it was during the classic era, and if you play a pure caster, shaman or shadow knight you get access to infravision through spells.

Class makes a much bigger difference than race, and I think being an evil race is probably more of a hindrance to new players than the human-kin races' lack of night vision.

I'm not sure if you still play, or if you currently play a human-kin race, but whenever they patched the sky... Night Blindness is very real.

The first character I started on P1999 was a human enchanter about a month ago and I leveled to 11 without ever feeling the need to use an illusion to gain infravision. I rerolled for better stats, and when leveling and a few times I ran the human illusion to get better prices sometimes (in retrospect that difference was probably marginal since I was near the Charisma cap for the purposes of vendor transactions) and again didn't feel like it was much of a hindrance losing infravision.

Last weekend I introduced by girlfriend to the game and watched over her shoulder while she played an erudite magician in Toxxulia and she didn't have any problems with making things out either, and I believe she played through at least one night cycle. She didn't even have a light source. She hasn't made a single comment about things being too dark.

I remember things being much worse for characters without infravision on classic, though maybe that was due to my monitor/display settings at the time.

Hi all, I'm getting set up to start playing again. I've install Titanium and following the instructions. However, when I attempt to link my EQEmulator account via the email I receive, I get the following error:

Failed to link forum accounts; Neither contain a loginserver account.

Any ideas?
