Game Mechanics: No damage = Kill Steal?

I died in upper guk, forgot to bind nearby so I had to run from north ro. On my run through oasis I saw a group killing a ghoul. We all know how fun corpse runs are, so I decided to liven it up by seeing if I could correctly time a slam on the ghoul they were fighting as I ran straight by with SoW. I was naked, so I knew I wouldn't do any damage.

I didn't even realize I had gained xp until I saw:

At first I thought he was just being stupid and giving me a hard time for hitting his ghoul. But, then I looked at my combat logs, and sure enough I got xp. This is a pretty big bug?
