Default Surface Pro 3 - trouble getting game to load

After the login screen, the game crashed during the load to character select with the message:
EverQuest Windows - Application Error
The instruction at 0x02af45b4 referenced memory at 0x036ff0ec.
The memory could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program.

Here's what I did:
Updated the SP3 fully
Turned UAC off referencing Secrets in a Surface Pro 2 thread.
Copied my EQ folder from desktop, a slim 1.34GB file that runs swell, to the SP3 to save space.
Made the normal shortcut with the patchme added
Running on adminstrator account and the game normally, and as admin
Matched eqclient video resolutions to match desktop

Got it to run. Confirmed the final thing that enabled the game to work was running in compatibility mode to win xp sp 2

Glad to hear you got it working. Considering buying a Surface for the lady for her b-day/cmass gift. Knowing that I can rack XP on it is huge!! [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

The Surface Pro 3 has a 12-inch screen with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2160x1440.
Is this accurate?

What resolution do you play EQ in? I assume the device "scales" the OS? How does EQ handle that?

Sorry for the off-topic question heh

Back in the day I had an incredible Sony Trinitron monitor, was 4:3 - 2560 x 1920 @ around 120 Mhz if I recall correctly. I could rack xp for days with no gaming hangover [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Bought that monitor for over $1000, years later I couldn't even give it away.

I matched the eqclient.ini resolution to the 2160x1440. It runs fine, but have to chatfontsize 4 or 5 to read anything. Haven't played on it too much yet, but my face creeps pretty close to the screen cause im used to much larger screens.

Could you elaborate more on this fix. I am having the same problem and would love to play on my Surface 2. Which file do you run the compatibility mode on? Sorry I'm not very tech savvy.

Bump, I'm trying to get my SP3 working as well but I'm not computer savvy at all and need a bit more details on the solution that the OP listed.

Thanks for any help/advise

I just got a SP3 and haven't had this problems.

Could you elaborate a little on how to set the resolution in the eqclient file? I see that it has
Width
Height
WindowedWidth
WindowedHeight

would you please share what I need to modify those numbers to =)
