Returning Player, game seems not to load anymore

I am returning to the game after taking a extended break only to find that I cannot seem to login anymore. I left the game the exact same as it was when I quit. I have not yet updated the new patch notes yet but I can. I still know all my accounts and passwords... But when I try and login on the old Emulator I just get a connection error. I was told I did not have to do anything in regards to the new Login changes I could just play the game as I always have.

Any thoughts as to why I cannot login?

Update the patch.
Try not to use the old Emulator.
Use a direct shortcut to the eqgame.exe file, with the added "patchme" at the end of the Target property.
