Default Playstyle Question Advice Please

Ok I got my titanium discs in the mail today and will be setting up soon. I have a question for server folks.

When I play, the time will be from 9-11:00 cst max, so 2 hours at most. With such a limited play time, what do ya think would be a viable character?

I guess being a porting class like wizard or Druid would help with short play times?

I have played necromancer on live to 70 and I do like the class so I know that is a good choice for if my limited playtime means mostly solo.

I was though interested in a few other classes. Can a shadowknight solo much through all levels? How about a ranger? I am not too interested in Mage.

Can being a porting class like Druid or Wizard be good for short playtimes? Never played either but I thought wizards were wanted for the boom boom.

The other question is are two hours a night doable as a group dependent class? I have no RL friends playing with me and I know no one on the server. I played a monk for awhile solo early live but it was way slow. I have wondered about rogue but it is totally group dependent.

So lots of questions. Any comments? I have never played shaman before, so wonder if that is an option for solo or short duration player?

Ranger won't work, I usually sit LFG for more than 2 hours when I play. Any casting class should work, though a cleric will be slow against anything but undead. The counter is that a cleric should be able to find groups quickly enough to make good use of those 2 hours.

I don't know enough about shadowknights to say, they are probably the best melee for soloing but are pretty gear dependent so my guess is you'll have a hard time without being an uber-twink.

Mage and necro are by far the fastest, mage being faster and easier but you don't want one so I'd go for a necro.

Necromancer, Magician, Shaman and Enchanter can all be viable for short periods of play. Welcome to Project 1999. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

2 hours is plenty of time for regular xp groups, in my opinion. Choose the race and class you like or want to try. As long as you're in a populated area, a pick-up group usually isn't terribly hard to find. I'm happy as long as a group mate alerts the other members in advance of when he has to log. It's a bonus if that person finds his own replacement. If there's plenty of warning, everyone can put out the word for a replacement, though.

Things aren't terribly hard, especially at low levels. Any class can fill a vacant spot for dps. There will be some groups that might reject someone because it's not the perfect class they're looking for. My experience in a pickup group is that those folks usually aren't worth grouping with in the first place. If you see me and there's an empty spot in the group, anyone in a similar level bracket who asks will get an invite as long as someone's not already on the way and there's at least a tank and healer.

In my experience as a tank so far (28), it's hardest to find clerics (except that group in Unrest with 3 clerics) and grouping enchanters. Seems like all the enchanters want to solo.

Snare necklace is in game.

Stick outside and you should have a very enjoyable experience with any of the solo classes that new guide feller mentioned. The karanas and ocean of tears, as well as spectres towards the upper levels in oasis and feerrott, are excellent for mages, shamans, and necros who can kill fast but prefer singles/space. I put a mage guide somewhere around here - a lot of those places are also good as a shaman, with the ones that are on the harder end being good a few levels later as a shammy.

As for SK solo power, there's some once you get fear and engulfing (~30?). You might find that enjoyable, but your exp would definitely be slower, and you probably want to play a large race as a tank, so both exp penalties will be killer with your limited playtime.

EXP penalties make a much bigger difference when you're soloing since when you group, they're spread throughout the group, so a 68% exp penalty for a troll shadowknight, in a full group, would only be a 12% penalty per person. (Of course, you have to think about what penalties and bonuses the rest of your groupmates have, as well.) So if you're looking to solo a lot, maybe a shadowknight isn't the best idea [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Unless they have solved the issue of spreading penalties to the group, your penalty is yours alone.

Again, correct me if I am wrong...but, this was not fixed last I checked.
