Quad issue?

I'm not sure if this is how it is supposed to be to make quadding harder but I noticed something today when I was quadding shadowed men on my wizard. Instead of doing the traditional way of grouping them up in circles and snaring I just casted one AE on them and they ran to me. Since I'm a much higher level wizard I just let them group around me and I casted the second AE. However, I noticed my Pillar spell not only hit all 4 shadowed men and me but it also hit me for a second round. I know if you are in range you will get hit but are you supposed to get hit by it twice. This one ae spell effectively hit 6 times, once for each of the 4 mobs and twice on me.
