Default Unknown Error / Error A Timeout has occurred

Greetings all.

New to Project1999 but it sounds like fun here. Unfortunately I am unable to progress past the server select screen, getting either Unknown Error and/or Error A Timeout has occurred messages every time.

Am now on my third re-install with no joy, am hoping someone has a couple of pointers for me.

All drivers up to date - checked.

First time, clean install EQ Titanium, followed instructions here http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2651
Error messages as above.

Second time, clean install EQ Titanium, patched using Duxa's All In One. Again same issue.

Third time, clean install EQ Titanium, followed the manual patching instructions here
http://www.project1999.org/forums/sh...ad.php?t=94928 Noticed that the login to server select was much faster and used the darkhollow screen this time, but again as far as getting onto the server still no luck [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Have been trying for approx 4 hours on and off now (watching the server population go up and down between 400 and 600 with envy), have tried both the Red and Blue servers (and likewise tried a couple of other servers on the select screen just for kicks) but same problem every time.

Have tried adjusting my eqclient.ini file to force into windowed mode as per one of Lyra's posts on similar issue.
Have tried both the
[LoginServer]
Host=login.eqemulator.net:5998
and
[LoginServer]
Host=leqemulator.net:5998
variants in eqhost.txt
Any thoughts?

First of all, I'm impressed with your progress so far. Be assured, you will be playing soon.

Is your Mobo overclocked? Even unintentionally?

And all Window updates have been installed?

Are you using dual monitors?

Default Solved - I think

Well, I think I've got it partially tracked down.....who would have thought that a dodgy old laptop like mine was too powerful for EverQuest [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

As far as I am aware there is no overclocking.

I'm running a eMachines E642 with an AMD Athlon II X2 P340 @ 2.20 GHz and 8 gig of ram. O/S is Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1 64-bit.

1) used msconfig to disable 1 core and rebooted.
2) set compatibility mode on eqgame.exe EverQuest.exe and the desktop shortcut to Windows 2000 mode, run as administrator and disable desktop composition.

This allows me to log in, set up a character and enter the world (specifically Felwithe). I note that changing zones takes quite a while - but that was Classic EQ [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] - unfortunately I seem to get dumped back to the account login screen after about 10 mins. Any suggestions?

Have tried a number of other compatibility modes
NT Server 5
XP SP2
XP SP3
but none of these will let me log in.
Tried downloading WinEQ2 but that failed as I could not update DirectX

Why couldn't you update DirectX?

What version are you using?

Downloaded the DirectX package from Microsoft and ran the installer but it kept failing, referred to a couple of error log files (which I could not locate) and then terminating.

Not sure what the current version is - presumably whatever came with Windows 7 SP1.

Sadly it appears my earlier post was too soon. EQ now locks up and remains unresponsive until closed down with task manager.

Click Start
Click Run
Enter dxdiag
Click OK

On the system tab (first tab) last item is DirectX Version

I still use XP on my PC, so I don't have "admin problems", but usually when a program fails to run on 7 it has to do with "admin problems".

DirectX 11

that said, I've persisted and things seem to have stabilised at the moment so I'm going to give it a whirl for a little while then log off for the night....lol midnight already.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

This sounded familiar. Then you said it was almost midnight. You are in a different part of the world, and it may be your connection to the server.

I'm hoping one of the Australian players will give input.
