Welcome! Crafting is useful for a few of the end-game Velious Quests:

https://wiki.project1999.com/Coldain...r_Shawl_Quests

https://wiki.project1999.com/Coldain_Ring_Quests

Outside of that, there are some end-game crafted items that sell for good money if you want to go down that route for making plat. Be aware that some of these items can be slower to sell:

https://wiki.project1999.com/Ice_Silk_Armor

https://wiki.project1999.com/Cultural_Tradeskills

https://wiki.project1999.com/Skill_Alchemy

Generally speaking the money-making tradeskills take a good amount of time, effort, and initial plat investment to create the items that players most want. Many players prefer to spend that time camping items for money instead.

The short answer is no, tradeskilling is not useful.

Look, tradeskills are fun, and I have nothing against them. Loramin has the 7th Shawl, and he's also a master blacksmith (working on grandmaster), so I'd be a hypocrite if I said "don't tradeskill".

But the honest truth is that established servers like Blue/Green have lots of existing tradeskillers. Any* item you could want to get through tradeskills can be acquired far faster/easier by buying it from them, vs. gaining the skill to make it yourself.

* With a few exceptions to prove the rule, such 7th Shawl https://wiki.project1999.com/Runed_Coldain_Prayer_Shawl (which you have to be a tradeskiller to get), or learning enough Pottery to make the Thurgadin Gate potion.

Where do you buy stuff on these servers? Is it the classic East Commonlands opening thing, or something else? How does one go about buying stuff at low levels, or you just muscle through or twink new toons? How would someone on their first char on 99 go about it?

Yeah we use the tunnel, sometimes arrange a transaction on discord or here and then log in your tunnel mule to make the trade.

Personally I would make my first character one of the classes that are effective with no gear as long as you can afford your spells. But if your heart is set on reliving your half-elf warrior main from back in the day, you can still make that work. The biggest mistake you can make is playing a class or race that you don't enjoy and then feeling that sunk-cost. I just think it's way more fun to play a gear-dependent class with gear.

Well, I enjoyed bard last time I played, and I figured they are wanted in groups. I made a human bard and am level 7, almost 8. I'm dying to group, but the few people I have run into have no desire to group for some reason, or even communicate back. The only people who have communicated back have been high levels passing through Qeynos. I feel like I could make this work solo, and have, but it feels a bit painful as a first toon with no funds. I don't mind the grind, but just killing blues solo gets old fast by yourself.

Don't bother with tradeskills IMO

Almost anything you can imagine, someone on p99 will be more than happy to make for you for a tip, at cost, or even just because they have 100 of those rings. If it's something truly incredible like a super long quest and magic item to make your regen mana faster, you tip them well

You gotta get out of Qeynos, that's a ghost town. Get yourself to Greater Faydark and go to Crushbone.

It's unfortunate, but the only zones you can reliably find groups are crushbone/oasis/unrest/mistmoore/city of mist.

I was going to buff some players in Guk last night and it turned out all 3 of them were being PLed separately. I don't understand not communicating back though, no excuse for that. But at this point in either server it's hard to find groups at lower levels. Maybe look into joining a guild, you might find some people with alts around your level range, or will help with ports and buffs, etc.
