Default New to classic EQ need alittle help!

Hey! I finally got project1999 working today and would like alittle help on starting as a new player.

I first joined EQ1 after the release of PoP, so this is kinda like a new game in a way to me. My main problem is that it seems so hard compared to when i first played the game :P ive been grinding and selling junk for what I would say is long (about 2 hours) and only managed level 3 :<, I never would have though Blues would give soo little exp. I was wondering what tips you guys could give to help me level my first faster, (Ogre SK). Is there certain buffs I could ask for, should I look for other players to group with?

Thanks for your time!

It is harder than what you're used to. At some point there was an exp bonus instituted for players under level 10 - there's none of that here.

Do NOT kill blues at very low levels (up to 3 at least). The amount of exp a mob gives is more or less proportional to the square of their level, so at level 3 a level 1 mob is giving you about 1/9th the experience of a level 3. That becomes not so much of an issue as you gain levels, but for the first few levels it's a good idea to keep track of what level particular mobs tended to be. You can kill level fours, for example, at level 5 and it won't be hurting you nearly so much.

Check for low level quests - they can help some. You can turn in lizard skins to your SK GM - give ok exp and some plat (you always get a rusty 2 hander as a reward). There are probably some better quests in Oggok, but I don't know them off the top of my head.

Just a heads up as an Ogre SK you have a 61% exp penalty. This could be the reason why you feel like your leveling slowly.

Here's a great thread on places to kill since your evil:

And here's places to level as you outgrow the swamp

Also remember to pick up some large sewing kits or alchemy pouches instead of backpacks.

2 hours isn't long in classic lol, but there are some things that could make leveling faster I guess. First of all, shadowknights have a 40% exp penalty, so there is you first problem. All hybrids have this penalty, which is why I stopped leveling my ranger : P

Grouping can be a lot faster than fighting solo, but people generally start grouping around lvl 5 +, when camps of mobs start to become available. I am not familiar with Feerrott at all, but it seems like a very unfriendly noob zone. I remember level three lasting forever, and exp generally got better after that.

Buffs do, of course, make leveling a lot nicer at lower levels. In EC, which is where most people hang out, it is very easy to run to the tunnel and get a bunch of buffs from people, DS, regen, sow, haste. I guess my biggest suggestion would be to reroll to a better starting area, and maybe a class with no penalty, OR run your ogre to the Freeport area. I am not sure, but maybe you can bind in Neriak, or is that trolls? Hopefully some other people have some better tips for you lol : /

Lizard meat, not lizard skins. And I'm not even drunk yet.

You can actually bind outside the WFP gates right where you zone in.

Also, if decided to keep your Ogre you can sell at two places in EC either Shady or the Merchant in the building between Orc1 and Orc2. It's the female on the left.

Yeah , but if you ever wanted to train, you'd have to run to Oggok right? kind of a pain in the ass. And you mean EC not WC : D

Depending on your Deity you can train in Neriak, Grobb, Ogguk, and the sewers in FP.
As an SK you only need to train at 6,9,10,12,17,20,30,35,40. *This does not include trade skills.

Also, Don't dump any points into Meditate until level 12. Known bug where it says you can train it but it's not true!

OK here is the thing. Back on live early on, starting areas were heavily populated. Many players having high level buffs would hang out in starting zones to chat, trade skill and buff people just starting out; I used to do this as well. So it was actually rare to not get buffs so to hit lvl 5 in under an hour. Just gotta hope someone is around casting damage shields etc.. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
