Default How to Ranger

Please help me understand more about how to play a ranger.

Will there ever be a time I'm expected to sit back and shoot at mobs or is it mostly just for pulling?

1h or 2h?

Any utility I'm expected to bring to a group?

and most important of all, is playing a ranger on this server even a good idea?

I'm not very familiar with the class, but so far being able to track is a lot of fun and I like using melee weapons instead of casting, so it seemed like a good choice.

Hi Dag,

I think rangers are mostly dps/pulling class. Also, being a hybrid class, you also suffer a 40% experience penalty. <---is that true? That's what i've heard and to my knowledge, its one of the less played classes on the server so stick to it! be unique!

They have a bad reputation on the server, so wether or not they suck you might be better off preparing getting often the 2nd choice for an addition to a group.

rangers are fine and can be fun to play. you get snare which is amazing. and sow eventually (34?). you get to use cool weapons. you can also invis. but you dont take hits well.

you mostly melee, no much use for bow other than pulling. you get harmony to help with pulls. i would sick with dual wield 1h weapons unless you have a really nice 2h.

Don't pick a Ranger if you want to level fast, or become an integral part of high-end raiding. The class isn't suited to either of those things.

If you're okay with those downsides, it will do fine (particularly in group content). It's mediocre to bad as a solo'er. Expect a certain level of ribbing from the community, as it's perceived as the weakest class.

Most Rangers dual wield, though you can use a 2H if you happen to find a particularly good one. 2H is particularly attractive from level 1-17, when you lack dual wield. In general, the Ranger tends to be regarded as a fun class to play.

i always kept up my 2hs/2hb skill on live as a ranger, but tbh i never really needed or used a 2h in solo or group play much, just for fun purposes mostly.
Go with duel weilding for sure! theres some nice 1hs/1hb and piercers out there for ya.

The bow is good if you NEED to solo, thats about the only way you can,.since there are no AA abilities the only bow spcialty you get is Trueshot disc in kunark, so in a raid situation you will most likely be standin up there with the rogues as your melee output will outdo your bow.

The class is fun tho, lots of utlility. just snare everymob if theres a chance it could walk into adds around 20-40% and get ready to root CC occasionally and you be fine. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I played a ranger on live for the last 7 years, and have to say it is one of the most versatile classes in EQ.

It is true that Rangers are pretty underpowered until Kunark comes out, but with so much utility I'd have to disagree with the mediocre to low ability for soloing. Dots, nukes, sow, roots snares and harmony for pulls, decent melee ability and tanking... all things that say "solo" to me, but also come in handy in many groups. A ranger can be used as crowd control, tank, dps, and even extra heals (these are mostly for between fights though).

As tanks we often hold agro better than a warrior because of spells like flame lick and snares. You won't be able to tank as effectively as a warrior, or even knights (especially on harder nameds), but you can fill-in for when the main tank goes down and you can snap agro off the cloth classes and healers to help keep them alive.

For dps use dual wield as much as you can, always putting the best ratio weapon in your primary hand (rough ratio = damage divided by delay... dam/delay). Procs also fire more often in the primary, so keep that in mind when equipping. I'd use the best ac shield I can get my hands until you get dual wield at level 17 (shiny brass shield from Orc Trainer makes a good starter shield).

If you are the primary tank for a grind group or something, using 2h is a good way to keep dps high and at the same time reduce your incoming damage. Less swings from 2h weapons means less riposte damage from the mob. So keep 2h skills up to at least near-max for those times where it makes sense to use 2h. If you don't have a good 2h weapon or the skills to use it, you can always go sword and board to reduce damage.

Being a good ranger takes practice, and many of your skills will not even be learned until you're in your late 30's and 40's. Much of your time will be spent using snares and roots for crowd control and pulls, and then dps'ing the rest of the time. But don't give up on it, because they can be one of the more rewarding endeavors in the game.

All my friends love what I bring to a group, because even at low levels I will put everything into using every skill that I have, which is pretty much what you have to do as a ranger to be good.

btw: that video is hilarious... GO RANGER!!!
