Error 1001

I decided to check out P99 but I am getting close to giving up on it. I've installed EQ twice, it is directly on the C drive and not in the Programs folder. I've installed the emulator and followed all the instructions on the getting started page. I am able to launch the server list and select the server but when I reach the point where I enter my password all I get is Error 1001 : Could not connect to the Everquest Server. Please try again shortly.

I am aware that the server has been having issues but I haven't been able to make it any further than this and it has been a couple days of trying at random intervals. Anyone have any advice or is this simply an issue with the server?
