My experience thus far has been several hours i played as a shadow knight about 9 years ago. But i have since forgotten all that info. just that i played it for about 3 hours. so im essentially walking into P99 with a clean slate.
And recently leveling up a wizard to lvl 3. (several more hours spent). i have yet to wander more than 300 yards outside the gates of Erdin. but im thinking of starting another character as im not really feeling the wizard. That said, i have some questions. Since the standard google search yields nothing useful since everything pertains to EQ now, not EQ back in the day. stat caps? are there any? Diminishing returns? At higher levels, does the race/class matter as much? such as an ogre warrior opposed to a halfling warrior? If race/class does matter, is there a site/link with said info? Ive seen a post somewhere here in my lurking that warriors and i think bards were horrible picks for newbies. any reason why? what class would be good for a newbie to learn the game and not be frustrated by overwhelming info? Is twinking an issue the way it is in WoW? those with characters they can afford to pimp out, will I be slowing down a group (so to speak) because my numbers arent up to their standard? And a friend of mine (who has logged hundreds of hours in classic eq) has stated she would join me as a cleric. what would be a class to best compliment her? At what level should i start seeking out groups? Or, what level does soloing become so painful that grouping is the best option? (i like grouping btw). i know i have more questions, but this was what i could think of.

This will help a great deal Orgs/haflings, each class has racial abilitys, some are better for each class depedning what you are playing, what each one is is listed on the site I linked. Warriors/bards are fine picks, only downfall is as a warrior you are highly group dependant so if you can't find a group then you are kinda screwed. Bards are awsome for groups/solo but they have a -40% exp penelty so people get frustrated trying to fight that exp grind. Newbie class to learn on: Mage, great in groups can also solo like a champ so not dependant in groups. People twink but it's not an issue with finding groups. Your friend to play if you play a cleric...enchanter/monk/warrior(really any class would work tho) Can find groups at any lvl. Soloing is only painful if you do not enjoy doing it, I would suggest necro/bard/mage...mage being the main pick

255 stat hard caps, 200 soft caps in cases where it applies.
Certain combos will level more slowly, some races have benefits, ogres are immune to frontal melee stun, iksars and trolls have regen, all large races have slam. Halflings have sneak, dark elves and wood elves have hide. Dwarves start with 50 sense heading. Anything that looks like it could live in your apartment can't see for shit in the dark. Warriors are a product of their gear. Bards are a product of skill and familiarity with the game. Bards can be attractive to newbies, but you may not like the experience. IMO, start with a shaman. SoW will let you make lots of mistakes and get away with it. Here twinking is whatever you can give your character. Which is anything that isn't no drop, except in some extreme cases where it does include them. No matter how bad you are, most groups won't notice as long as you aren't afk with a full mana bar for minutes at a time. Clerics are a very needy class at low levels. Play what you want and either find groups or make her adapt. Groups start as early as 5, orcs in gfay/ec, gnolls qhills. How effective soloing is at any given level depends on your class. The details about what's best will be argued to no end, so you'll get the specifics from other posters.

Stat caps: You can get up to 255 in a stat at the moment. Diminishing returns exist for mana gained from int/wis over 200, rest seems to be subject to some debate. Race choices: The higher level you get and (especially) the better gear you get, the less relevant your race choice is as gear adds more and more +stats. Ogre does really add a fair bit more stats than other races though and trolls have their innate regen for one. visit wiki.project1999.org and look through the race info for details on each race. I won't lie and say that it truly "doesn't matter", but the differences aren't significant with good gear. Warriors/Bards for newbies. Warrior is an uphill battle simply because they are very gear dependant and starting out, of course you can't really afford the good stuff. That said, lots of mid level "second tier" gear is quite cheap at this point so it isn't really THAT bad getting them geared up. This goes for all melee really. Bards aren't nearly as gear reliant and I wouldn't say are a bad choice. In the end though, best bet is starting out with a caster of some sort but it certainly isn't required. Good classes for newbies: Necro is a safe bet, so is druid. Druids are good for raising money and for getting around the world easily since they have ports, not so desirable for 6 man groups however. Mages clear through weaker mobs fast with their fire pet that has a damage shield. Shaman have all sorts of tools to be effective solo or in groups, even without good gear. Honorable mention to Enchanters, which while they require a good degree of situational awareness, aren't gear dependant and both solo and group extremely well. Twinking: It's "an issue" in that many people are twinked. As far as getting in groups, not so much. Also if you're a caster, people will invite you based on class rather than gear. Duoing with a cleric: Clerics pair well with many classes, so this isn't very restrictive. If you're doing any sort of soloing where you (or even a pet) are taking damage, you can pair well with a cleric. When to group?: Once you reach level 5-6 or so, feel free to start grouping. Probably the most populous places to go as a very low level for grouping are greater fay (orc hill camps and then crushbone) or east commons (orc camps, then dervish camps in nro, on to oasis etc).

I don't think I have ever been asked what gear I have to be invited into a group.
All Hybreed's have a 40% or more penality. If you don't like to pull a Monk is a bad choise. If you can't walk and chew gum at the same time forget about a Bard. Twisting is NOT easy, while running and fighting. Mage kind of sucks now because of pet class penality. You have to do 51% or more damge now on pet classes to get full XP solo. Not a problem in groups though. It still comes down to what you like to play. Every class has good and bad things. Even a Ranger is not that bad solo. Just don't try to get a group with one lol. Some people make the worse classes just for the challenge to level them. Just have fun and enjoy it. That is why there is 8 Charactor slots. I can tell you a Necro, if you like to play them, is a very good first choise to help farm gear for other toons you want to start. They pretty much have every trick in the book on here. Pretty killer solo. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

If twisting while moving or while using an assist key is hard, then wtf is any modern MMO? Ridiculously impossible?

WoW messed up my view of the MMO community, im sure you can understand. (why i no longer play it) But to be welcomed into a group with open arms the way it used to be, will be a very nice change.
