![]() The strip's title is Empirical. As in, empirical research. Empirical research means you gain knowledge through direct observation or experience. If he wants to find out empirically if he'll marry her, well... =p
It's not particularly funny in and of itself, but it's clever. The mouseover makes it work. xkcd isn't about funny as much as it's about clever.
