Make sure your agi is at least 75.
Which race did you pick to start?

25 stam or 25 str is what I would do now-a-days.
Even with 10 slot 100% weight reduction summoned bags you'll still want to carry stuff in normal bags when you log out. Before you get yourself some nice shiny tinker's bags the extra STR will help. Also with coin weight.

Int is easier than ever to max now with velious equipment.

(I went erudite. So I did something like 5 agi, 5 str, 20 stam)

I'm thinking of either high elf or dark elf

so 25 stam 5 str would be best?

Yes 25 stam 5 str is a wise distribution for mage in velious.
High elves only have 55 starting str. So keep that in mind. Dark elves start with 60.

If you don't have weight reduction bags (not the summoned ones) you'll have a hard time with loot and coin weight. That is,.. the loot you want to save. or even focus items.
The level 1-49 focus items weigh 3.5 each.

A sidetip is you can chance the background color of windows. So I made my bag slots where my weight reduction bags are a bright color to clearly see they will poof when I log.

At level 60 for casters 25 stam is ~60 hit points. 25 int would be like ~250+ mana. But as I stated before you can easily cap int especially in velious.

Food for Thought: 25 CHA would increase your sell prices for vendor food. Up to a point.

Dark Elves get ultra vision but mages also get it with cold stone (ammo slot). So that perk is pretty mute.
Dark Elves get Hide, which can be useful from time to time.
Being evil limits your towns. Which in velious is not as bad as it sounds.
