Default State of Wizards

Thinking about coming back at some point, Wizards still garbage in groups?

I probably have ~80k to twink, could be fun, maybe...? What kinda stuff should I get?

Good wizards are awesome. Are you a good wizard? Most aren't. :/

As for gear, grab mana items. Some would argue that mana doesn't matter, only mana regen matters....but they aren't the ones that you'll be grouping with anyways so screw those guys. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

They aren't about sustained dps. They can offer a lot to a group though. Can help cc, blow up casters, pick up/evac groups, etc.....

Or you can waste mana on useless crap and go afk to med like most... (hopefully not! )

If you want to have usefull DPS, you need to get manaless clicky nukes. First one is that staff from kurns. Without such your sustained DPS will be as low as a paladins or probably even lower.

I don't think 80k would be that useful for a grouping wizard. Your power comes from your spells more than anything. The number one thing to get is a staff of temperate flux. If you want to solo J boot are handy too. Instaclick nukes like solist want might be useful to you too. I guess you could get a prenerf fungi staff and manastone if you had the budget, that would make a difference?

Going slighty off topic, I'm not really a nerd at wizard, but here are a couple of my experiences:

Lost staff of the scorned is great dps for the first 10 levels if you want to cosplay a monk. Keep hold of it because at later levels it's a manaless group port to 1 zone away from a bank city and from EC. Super handy.

Root the mob on inc so tank can establish aggro, slowers can do their thing and so on.

Learn caster mob's AI so you can begin casting your stuns before they begin casting the things you want to interrupt.

Keep an AoE rain loaded so if you get charmed you can remind the group who is boss. Keep a rez bot parked nearby.

Brilliant!

If you want to have more fun, get a Tola robe and hp/mana gear and a druid to PL you. Beating on 20 mobs with thorns and casting your pbaoes is the best way to get to 20. It's what I did on live. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Xp groups are not a wizards forte, and they lack any meaningful twink items to make levels go much faster. Icy wand is good for like 4 levels, and decent dps click robes probably not available until you have outgrown xp groups.

However, if the group makeup is right and situation is right, they can be an ok addition to a group (can be decent cc, decent puller, good short burst dps if you need it.) Some places like the hole, groups will want a porter for easy exits, and TL is nice if just one group member has to leave.

With velious, they again still lack in itemization, but with potg and group c2 you can get 17 mana/tick without medding, so you can solo pretty well and just gate back to ec for buffage (just be sure to tip cause those spells lots of mana, you'll not be needing the full 80k though i don't think.)

Qaos is correct. Twinking can really only take you so far on a wizard due to terrible itemization. A melee toon can buy a kickass weapon, haste, and fungi and be unbelievably overpowered for at least 40 levels. A caster can... get +mana items and maybe some jboots? Your best bet is to stay near heavily populated areas to keep clarity up at all times. As a wizard, you can bind wherever you're exping and port back to NRo and run to EC every 30 minutes to refresh buffs. That's as close to effectively twinking yourself as you can really get without spending way more than 80k.

Do people invite Wizards to groups at all? I kind of don't want to do the quad kiting thing, since I solo/duoed on my Enchanter from 29-60.
