![]() Reading forums i'm hearing monk can tank as well as a warrior can and have far more dps? ( not including discs ). So i'm wondering if i would be better off rolling a monk instead of warrior if i don't intend to be a raid MT?

![]() Monks are extraordinarily versatile. They are durable and highly effective in combat. They are also offer a far more engaging experience and are far cheaper to outfit. Consequently, there are many of them. The people love monks though, so that is not a problem.

![]() Not to mention monks (especially ones tanking) can't carry much. That is a problem if you like looting things.
I would say play a monk if you want to be the puller (and likely die a bit to failed FD, caster mobs, etc.) or play a warrior if you want to be a tank that does nice damage.

On live monks could mitigate damage as well as warriors with the same worn AC. However, it is easier to accrue AC on warriors than on monks. The reason Live changed from a hardcap to softcap system for AC was warriors could reach the cap too easily and not benefit from further AC gains. Velious introduced so many high AC items other classes could hit this cap too, which eroded warrior class advantage. As with many things in EQ the mechanics were hidden from the players, but warriors did have an advantage; as it was easier for them to hit the AC hardcap they could start stacking other tanking stats, such as HP earlier on. With the preference for clerics having more hp meant getting better value from heals. Also, you discount discs as a raid main tank thing, but evasive lasts for a decent amount of time and refreshes on 15 minute timers, so are pretty handy even in groups. Regarding DPS, EQ itemisation was designed around blunts being the weakest class of weapons, which is something monks were balanced around, and were given a chance to hit harder with weapons than other classes could. In Kunark this philosophy turned around and monks went from having the worse ratio weapons to best, but maintained their ability to be more damaging with any weapon they used. The saturation of kunark weapons in EC is part of what makes monks such good DPS. Velious itemisation goes someway to turn this around, but we haven't had 6 years of market saturation with Velious drops yet. As such, with ECmart level characters monks probably still are at a dps advantage. In otherwords, lack of foresight in game design and a lack of hindsight in itemisation can give the appearance of monks being the strongest balance of dps/defence, but warriors arguably start to even out later on in Velious content. Note, this server has a softcap not hardcap AC system in place (i.e. you continue to receive a small benefit from AC even if you surpass the AC cap).
