Default Starting stats

Hey guys,

Going to be rolling a new char here this evening. Haven't played vanilla EQ in so long. But it was the MMO which gave me my fondest memories.

Looking to start a char that will be sought after in groups. Considering a ranger ( I know, LOL) or cleric.

Could someone tell me which stats to put into for those two classes? Thinking all wisdom for cleric and all con or all dex for the ranger but not sure.

Thank you!

you're thinking stamina not con... but I would recommend STA for both classes... Clerics will have plenty of gear that will allow you to max out your WIS and STA will increase your HP which is helpful to everyone.

full points into sta as a ranger since most of the gear you will be seeking will be adding towards str and dex.
any left overs add to much needed str.

As any melee (except maybe a bard or rogue) I'd say full points into STA, and then STR with any leftover points.

For casters (except enchanters, which I never played) I always put full points into WIS or INT as appropriate and any leftover into STA.

My thinking on this is that STA does not give as many HP to casters as it does to melees. Also, maxing our WIS or INT allows you to use +mana, +hp, or +sta gear in more slots.

Stamina became the predominant 'dump stat' for melee during the Velious era, which is what most of the folks posting here seem to best remember.

This is not currently Velious era.

If you're starting out as a brand new player and make a weaker-race melee (which applies to all Ranger races) with max stamina, there's a fair chance you'll quit before you make level 30 due to being constantly encumbered. I know at least 7 folks who did--several of whom blamed their racial choice as opposed to their poor stat allocation. If you decide to go the full stamina route, be sure you know what you're getting yourself in to. It can work, but the folks it works for are mostly the folks who intend to rush up to the level cap as quickly as possible.

My own recommendation for a brand new melee player is to invest heavily in Strength. If you want that full stamina build, I recommend making another character first and using it to buy whatever +str gear you can find to hand down to the Ranger or other melee once you create it.

Eh it shouldn't that bad. I'm a barb and I maxed my stamina. As a warrior I had to wear medium bronze.

Rangers would at least wear medium or small banded which is much lighter than medium bronze.

I feel sorry for paladins and non-large race warriors/sks.

Barbarian warriors start with what, 113 strength as I recall? That's already higher than any Ranger race is even capable of reaching. For a ranger, you'd be looking at 70 to 80 base strength due to the races they get to pick. That's bad even with banded and a couple weapons.

Notably, stamina scales faster on this server than it did in classic back in the day, which is also something to consider. It's not a bad stat *if* you know what you're getting yourself in to and don't mind being a constantly-encumbered, not-fun-to-play character for most of your leveling. For folks who ONLY care about end-game, go for it.

It depends on what you're playing EQ for. Danth plays to duo in guk with Lara, or to find a group in solb; enjoying just the day to day of EQ. That's what he enjoys and I love this guy!

However, I'm a crazy minmaxer (not so crazy as to roll a dwarf though). I play to maximize the character in whatever way possible. The way EQ breaks down for tanks is stamina for complete heal. Even in the classic era your HP total is gonna dictate your cleric's mana (we just didn't know that 10 years ago). So even as an erudite SK I'd say staaaminaaaaaAAAA! I spent my days in sola in my 20s with full bronze naturally encumbered because I went stamina build, and I never regretted it.

So the 15 points of sta vs str won't be game changing by any means, it just depends what you want from the game.

but honestly, I feel like stamina is wasted on rangers, cuz once they draw agro (and yes, they WILL), they will die. I would say that, like rogues, they should go for maxing their stats that make them useful outside of tanking (dex for procs, agility for whatever the hell it does, etc.)

Right, listen to him if you don't listen to me :P That being said, Karsten's the crazy one, not you--he went full stamina on a High Elf. He DID know what he was getting himself into so was okay with it.
