Druid, necro, mage are good starters. Google the p99 wiki cuz there is a butt load of info on it. Welcome to p99!

You're probably going to die a lot until you get the hang of it. One of the most important spells in the game is Spirit of Wolf (SOW), a movement speed increase that lets you outrun mobs to safety.
Because it is your first time, I recommend playing a class with SOW, either a druid or a shaman. You will be able to group with both.

Hey Welcome!
Massive respect for you diving into EQ for the first time... Its not easy but it sure as hell is fun and rewarding. So much to go over, I would read the Wiki as much as possible to get the basics. I would love to help if you need it. Let me know you can find me in game as Cloke Gozuk Tokitae or Keyx is just msg me here! You could always hit me on skype or something if you have it. So much easier to explain it by talking over typing

Magician in a good race/religion. My other suggestions would be Druid any race, Barbarian Shaman or Gnome/Human Necromancer.

Eqravenprince makes a good point. Starting as an evil race, class, religion, or any combo of makes the game significantly more difficult. Especially for someone who has never played before. Go with a good race/class/religion combo.

A few things you should know when starting that druid:
1) You will be able to train meditate at level 8. DO IT, it makes things much much easier. Actually the levels right before 8 are a pain because of the lack of meditate. 2) Buffs can make a really big difference, especially at low levels. 3) Since you do not know EQ, try to group from early on to get a feel for it and to have somebody to ask stuff. 4) Early on, save all your money for spells. Later you will be able to build reserves for other stuff, but at the first few levels you usually have a money problem. Equipment is much less important as a caster.

Yeah, imo druid is the easiest to start out with. Gear drops everywhere for them, and you are not going to need much AC and wisdom until mid 30's and only if you go the quad-kite rout. You can make plats porting people around if you want.
I'd recommend taking up a little tailoring early on, make yourself some leather armor, or studded with a wee bit of blacksmithing.
